2008 Rogue SLAWD with 140,000 miles on it.

I was driving down the road, everything seems fine and suddenly the transmission seemed like it disengaged the driveline. The car coasted to a stop but if i pushed on the throttle, it wouldn't engage.

When the car stopped, I put it in park. Then I put it back in drive and the engine labored, like the car was being held in place but no movement at all.

Interesting though. When I put it in drive or reverse, it acted normal, like the clutches engaged with slight rpm drop but as soon as i apply throttle, the engine labors but the car won't move at all.

I got out of the car in neutral and it rolls freely but the car won't move when it was placed in gear.

Any ideas?

From this description of P0720, http://engine-codes.com/p0720_nissan.html

Either the CVT is damaged or it's a faulty sensor. Time to take it to a mechanic and have it checked out.

The vehicle speed sensor CVT [output speed sensor (secondary speed sensor)] detects the revolution of the CVT output shaft and emits a pulse signal. The pulse signal is sent to the Transmission Control Module (TCM), which converts it into vehicle speed.

ask your dealer for a revolution sensor in your transmission. i think we MIGHT have 2?

I think I may have found the problem. The speed sensor tests fine. However, there is still an error code present. The reason seems to be, there is no output shaft rotation when the transmission is placed in drive or reverse and when the throttle is applied…car doesn't move. The transmission seems fine, it is engaging, the RPMs drop when the gear elector is placed in drive or reverse but when I hit the throttle, the engine labors and the car does not move. I am told there is a "pin" in the transfer case that carries the output from the transmission to the AWD driveline. We will soon find out if this "pin" has failed and is the cause of the problem.
Stay tuned.

I drive a ton of freeway miles everyday. The majority of my driving is "low impact", long distance cruising on the NYS thruway and the Mass Pike. Yes, my car has 139000 miles on it but most of my cars, like my last Toyota, i retired it with 390,000 miles on it and my Mazda 626 had 351,000 miles.

The only car that ever stranded me in 40 years of driving is my Nissan Rogue.

I know…things happen and they have happened to me in the past "but the car always got me home"…limping maybe but it got me home.

Not my Nissan!

My wife's brand new 2014 Infinity Q50 Sport sat in the dealer parking lot for 24 days broken down with 1200 miles on it!

We've owned nearly $200,000 worth of Nissan cars since 1994 and I'm doubting we'll be owning anymore!

Sorry…just a little "used up" by Nissan at the moment.

moving this to the General Chat. good rant by the way. i fully understand your frustration. idk wtf happened to nissan, but this rogue is also my last nissan. i myself come from a long line of nissans:
1999 nissan altima gxe 5mt: (150,000 - no problems. car was flawless)
2001 infiniti i30: (150,000 - no problems. car was flawless)
2002 nissan maxima gle: (162,000 - no problems. car was flawless)
2008 nissan rogue (noticeable trany issues coming up. wont deal with them till the car is broken down completely)
2010 infiniti g37s 6mt (new trany was put in just a few thousand miles off the dealer lot)
- and guess what, the g37s was traded in for a hyundai santa fe. the woman couldnt be any happier.

Sorry Imstricken, Your post came through just as I was merging the new thread with the original one created by the OP. The second one was IMO a continuation of the first post, just in a new thread.

Yall are scaring the bejesus out of me with this CVT transmission. Especially the heat related issues. I am New Orleans, mid summer + humidity will break anything. I guess that is why I couldn't beat people off of me at the Nissan Dealership w/my '05 Prerunner Trade in. Hoping my wish for some strange instead of going Prerunner again isnt a mistake. :ohno:

The verdict is in…the transmission catastrophically failed with 139,000 miles on the odometer. Seems like Nissan knew exactly what they were doing when they extended the transmission warranty to 120K miles!

The car is otherwise "flawless". Since the value of this car is so low, I'm not sure what to do with it? The cost of a new transmission is crazy. The damn thing looks like a 2 year old car and the engine runs excellent! Other than these transmission issues, the car has actually been 'a very good piece" and prior to this failure, I would have purchased another…I had actually planned on buying a 2015 Rogue next year.

We presently own 3 Nissan products:
2008 Nissan Rogue 139K miles
2009 Infinity G37X 41K miles
2014 Infinity Q50-S 3700 miles

Just sold:
2004 Infinity G35 stick 56K

The G35 was great. The G37 has had no issues so far. The Rogue is dead in the water and the 2014 Q50s was back to the dealer after 1800 miles and sat in their lot for 24 days waiting for parts. Seems ok now…but a $55,000 car? I didn't see that coming.
All purchased from the same dealer.

Lia Nissan/Infinity has been really great to us but I'm not sure if I'll be purchasing Nissan products in the future???

We'll see how they handle this transmission issue.

Mark.

Does anyone here know if this happens to anyone else after the warranty is up, how much will it cost to replace the transmission? What's the cheapest price for a new transmission if you were to buy it yourself and are there vendors other than the dealerships that sell this transmission? It would be good to know so that if someone had to pay to get theirs replaced they could save a few bucks by maybe buying it aftermarket or from a different supplier than the nissan dealerships.

Did you ever get this resolved? I am having a similar issue but did not get an error code or check engine light. What kind of code reader did you use? I used the reader below: https://www.amazon.com/KOBRA-Scanner-OB ... ord=nissan

Those are handy for some things like reading coolant temp and such, just monitoring your engine on your phone while you drive. To be able to access all/most areas of your car you’ll need to spend a bit more than $12 and a free app. In your other thread I asked if you knew someone with a higher end scanner. I have one of these.

https://www.amazon.com/Launch-Tech-3010 ... bd+Crp+129

It will do most of what I want to do and I have a friend who keeps a fleet of Gas Co vehicles on the road and he has access to one of the high end Mac Tools scanners. Around $5k. Just in case my little cheapie doesn’t cut the mustard.
