Ok, so I got the transmission back in today! Yeah! Or maybe not  I put the driveshaft back in as we'll, and when I went to spin it by hand, it wouldn't budge. So I put the wheels back on it and put it on the ground to rock it back and forth a bit figuring it was maybe stuck in gear, but it didn't work.

If I keep bouncing it back and forth, it slowly moves the car, but it gives the same result no matter what gear I'm in. It's almost as though the transmission won't come out of gear. Any suggestions? The transmission has been out of the car for 3-4 months while I've been building the motor.. New clutch and pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bushing. Changed transmission front oil seal and upper Gasket. Nothing that should be affecting it

Not sure what would bind on the driveshaft, unless it was the center bearing (assuming you're using a 2-piece)...

I'm assuming this is the 5 speed transmission? Are you sure the shifter is hooked up right and it's out of gear? Can you shift it through the gears? Can you feel like it's definitely in neutral>

It would seem odd that the transmission woudl "lock up", I'm not sure I've ever heard of something like that happening.

I can hear it going through the gears. It is the two piece, but the bearing on the shaft was spinning freely before I installed it today. It's more of a bind at the transmission. I can actually move the car as I bounce it, so it's not completely locked, but binding hard. I cleaned surface rust off the outer portion of the shaft that goes into the tail of the transmission. Any chance it could be binding if I missed any? This is the part of the driveshaft that goes onto the transmissions output shaft

I don't wanna sound like a smart a**, but the parking brake isn't on right?

There's really nothing that would cause the driveshaft itself to bind up (center bearing, differential, etc.) so it has to be a transmission issue. Weren't you having trouble getting the trans to engage fully?

I haven't driven the car since purchase. I bought it to rebuild. But it rolled fine in neutral and went into gears fine before I tore it down. Yes the ebrake is off, the rear section spun fine before I installed the front half.

Could the drive shaft be binding where it goes onto the output shaft? It slid on about half way, then I had to persuade it on further. I figured that was just from the rust I had to clean. Could I have hosed something?

Update: I hooked it up to the truck today and drug it backwards. It's not in gear because I was able to pull it backward and with two people, push it forwards. Then I jacked it up, tried to spin the back wheels, and the driveshaft still doesn't spin freely

If its binding up that bad, there is either something wrong with the transmission, the rear end, the rear brakes, or a bearing. To rule out the rear end remove the shaft and see if the wheels turn, if they do, then you need to look into your trans.

The trans should be only able to move freely when its in neutral. If you have it in gear, it will either be not possible or very difficult. I see you have said the rear section spins fine, so the issue has to be the trans. When you installed the shaft with the rust spots on it, the worst damage you can do with that is mess up the seal. Will not cause any binding. Try pushing in the clutch and someone pushing it. If it still doesn't move, there is something wrong internally. I know you say you can feel it go through all the gears, but are you absolutely sure you have the shifter assembly hooked up correctly?

If you also want to see if its truly stuck in gear, have someone try and rock the car and watch the crank pulley. Stop pulling it with another vehicle, you could further damage the problem to where its unfixable or damage something that is not broken you.

Ok, the crank is not turning. Also, I had only I walked it back about 3 feet with the truck in 4 wheel drive low.... Slowly. I wanted to see if it was in gear and would pop out of gear. I'm stumped. I dont think it is in gear. Also, last nit i went through the fsm again, and yes the shifter is in correctly. Think I'm going to finish buttoning up the car, then if I have to pull the transmission after, I will. So burnt out on the trouble I had getting it in the pilot bushing solo, I don't feel like looking at the transmission again for a while. I'll just have to jack up the rear end when I crank it.

You must be trying to up your post count.. cause you didn't even read :nono:

Actually, since you woke this up, I'll update it. It was the output shaft was just stuck from sitting. After driving it, it turns easily by hand now. :bigthumb:
