Driveshaft noise spinning wheel by hand?

Got to take my project around the block for the first time after extensive rework. Getting a bad rubbing/vibration type noise. I couldn't locate it exactly, seemed definitely not passenger rear wheel, but I couldn't distinguish well between the diff, drivers wheel and the driveshaft. Girlfriend got under car, and I was also able to spin wheel faster, and she pointed up to effectively where the carrier bearing is, and was pretty confident. She doesn't know the mechanics of the car well, so she didn't just pic the carrier bearing as a common failure point. I hear it down at the diff too, but it would make sense that a vibration is transferring from the shaft to the diff/axle.

Problem is my carrier bearing is in great shape, I know, it was just off the car. Im pretty sure its mounted correctly if this picture is correct: Image

Typically when people talk about DS noise, they say it happens at speed. This literally reproduces when turning the wheel at any speed by hand.

Some other fun background: replaced all subframe, diff and suspension arm pieces with ES poly. I'm using a TT 5spd front half with a replaced mating piece and a NA 5spd back half to my now NA diff.

Ideas? I've seen people say try rotating the DS 90 deg, but this would only seem to fix balance issues at speed, this is all the time.

I'd say to start by dropping the driveshaft. Just separate it from the rear diff if you can. Then rotate the wheel by hand again. Would tell you if it's the carrier bearing or the diff.

After thought: Before you go through dropping the driveshaft, pull the rear wheels off. Takes a few minutes only; but, it would allow you to diagnose whether the odd unlikely possibility for the grinding noise to be the wheel grinding against the calipers or a dust shield and transmitting the noise back through.

Thanks for the thoughts. Dust shields are/were a culprit because they did get bent around a bit when I had the axles/hub off the car. I did try to bend the drivers side back (passenger didn't sound like it) and it didn't make a difference. I will try tinkering with the shaft some.

I also just went ahead and ordered an AMZ 1 piece steel, although I may have to run a few days on this 2-piece. I still need to make sure I get the noise source right if its not the DS or I will still be hosed.

I was going to suggest checking the u-joints. But looks like you bought yourself a 1-piece DS, so IF that was the problem it won't be in the future.

It's possible. The 5spd NA back half I got was off a random car, but I think it had been driven within the last couple of months. I thought about trying to oil it up some. Didn't really see a good way to apply grease to it.

I may still use the 2-piece for the moment as a stop-gap if I can get the noise to stop and be confident something it isn't about to destroy itself.

Trying to finish up the build/project to get on the track the weekend after this, and this is a pretty big roadblock.

Update: Currently have the driveshaft off, plus both calipers and rotors. That should knock out any dirvehsaft or brake issues.

It's still hard to tell, pretty much seems like the diff. It wasn't doing this before. I did put new Redline 75W-90 in the diff. Also, had the entire subframe, axles, etc apart at one point.

Ideas on a potentially noisy diff or axles? Could it potentially be from sitting for a while or the new fluid?

Added a video. This is under the drivers wheel, but it sounds similar across the rear.:

It's just the diff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAX4PTlOXnU. I'm pretty much at a loss. It was fine before we put it back on the subframe. Dumped old diff fluid, replaced with Redline 75W-90, roughly 1.8L. Sealed it up. Would have seen and smelled that much fluid escaping. Not a lot else left, not sure how the diff could have exploded like that. Going to do another once over and try draining the fluid.
