I did do a search on this, but didn't find too much....I have a downloaded copy of the FSM, but the electirical section seems to have omitted the power window section

I have a 91 hatch, and when I bought the car a week/two ago, both windows work. Now, my drivers side is stuck up. The switch on the drivers side still works the pass. window, so I wouldn't think it's that.

I only saw one fuse in the engine bay for the power windows, and the fuse is fine. Does anyone have any tips for checking power/connections so I can troubleshoot what part is bad, ie, what is preventing the window from working.

I have the door panel off already, and all connections seem to be good (no loose wires), but I just need a push in the right direction for what to check for. If there is a topic on this already, please give me a link, because I was not able to find any procedures for this.

Thanks in advance,Justin

Usually the drivers window is the first to go since it gets the most use. You can buy a multimeter or a basic test light to test the wires for power. You can also carefully cut open the wiring harness that goes between the front door and the body and look for a broken wire.

There is a blue and green wire going to left window motor. One wire should be ground and the other 12v. Use multimter to check voltage at the motor. If there is power , it is likely that motor is the problem. Check to see if polarity reverses when you switch from down to up. you measure 12 volts from wire to car ground. other wire will be the ground wire. this reverses to allow motor to go in opposite direction.

power window schematic is on page 8 of foldout in fsm. i have a diagram for 1991 out of library.it shows wire colours. i think it was mitchels.

hey, vancouverbc, thank you very much for the tip, however, with my results I have another question (though I think I know the answer)...

I disconnected the harness with the blue and green wire and hooked up the multimeter...when I push the switch to the "up" position, I get exactly 12v...however, when I move it to the "down" position, I get nothing

Time for a new switch? I didn't think it was that at first, since it still operates the power window lock and passenger window, but I suppose the contact point could be bad in just one place???

Think I should just go for a new switch (anyone got one for sale??), or is there a specific wire or other part I should be checking?

Thanks

Just to be clear, how did you measure voltage in down position? It should be between the blue and green wire.

There is a power window amp between the main switch and left power window motor. The power window amp could be faulty. When you are in the down postion terminals 1,2, and 3 on power window main switch (left door)should be ground. 1. white-red 2. blue-white 3.blue-black If they are not ground, something is wrong with the switch. I've never seen the switch but sometimes you can fix these things. it's ground if you measure 12volts from the wire(ie terminals 1,2, and 3) to positive 12v.
