Drivers power seat slide

The STBBT00-029a details the replacement of the drivers side slide motor; but the motor itself sells for ($235 - $290 depending on site), and an independent shop will probably charge at least 1.5 hr for the installation.

Is there a reasonably priced alternative? I've tried to "push" and "hammer routine" - but there is no 'buzz' when the activator is pressed. The seat back motor works fine...it's just the slide motor.

I read a FYI by stmuck on Aug 20th, 2012 that explains why there are so many reported faults from this device...mainly the lack of a retaining nut on both rods.

I'm an electronics tech and have never seen a servo motor that can't be repaired fairly cheaply...even the really BIG ones.

So, what a relatively poor QX4 owner to do?

And yes, I've considered moving the passenger slide motor over to the drivers side - but am curious if there is any potential problem with that.

Why not just migrate to one of the Recaro clone racing seats? I -assume- they could be made to fit since they are advertised as "Universal"...and that would remove the issue from future concerns.

The ones I looked at sell for about $350 new, plus $100+ for shipping, which is somewhat more than a replacement of the existing slider motor, but then one would have to add in the cost to re-uphoster to avoid the "ticky-tacky" look.

So, ugh...it looks like I gotta stay with the factory issue units...just re-work the seat's mechanicals so the problem does not re-appear in a few years.

Also, no one seems to have an issue with either the elevator motor, or tilt motor - just the slide motor. Right?
