Post

I replaced the driver side valve cover gasket today and I did something wrong, because the oil leak is worse. Oil is gushing out of the bottom rear of the cover.

What I did:
  • Followed the tightening sequence in the FSM
  • Used the RTV stuff on the 2 small grooves in the back and the one on the front. Not sure I used enough.
  • Cleaned all surfaces
Questions:
  • How much of the RTV stuff should I use?
  • I did not remove the intake or the throttle body and had to slide and angle the cover. Should I have removed these to make the job easier?
  • Some of the posts here mention a plastic piece/rubber piece that should go in the rear groove. I do not recall seeing this piece (will check under the car tomorrow). Should there be one or 2 pieces? If one, does it go in the bottom groove?
  • Shouldn't the gasket and silicone be enough seal the groove?
I believe that the gasket is not sitting properly in the bottom groove. I will get a mirror and try to investigate some more tomorrow, but wanted to cover all bases.

Thank you!
