I have a 2006 Z tourer and I love it... with one big exception. I bought the car from a family member with 5000km on the clock, always garaged and in immaculate "as new" condition (as you would expect). However, after approx 6000km, I noticed that some of the painted finishes (coated with a matt black, almost rubberised coating) on the interior trims (i.e. door rests and glove box) had also started to show unsightly scratches. That’s right… 6000km. The scratches got worse, particularly on the driver’s-side door trim and glove box (centre console) where the trim displays no durability whatsoever. Assuming the problem to be a fault with the trim, I raised it with my local service centre and lodged a claim with Nissan hoping that the repairs could be carried out during the 10,000km service. To my astonishment, the claim was rejected. I then contacted Nissan directly to have the vehicle assessed by a Nissan Assessor. By this stage, the arm rests on both doors, the glove box, door handle fixture and even the gauge cluster had paint missing or scratches (that’s right… the gauge clusters!). I was later informed that the claim had been rejected and the damage would not be covered under warranty as it had been caused by ‘wear’. Struggling with the idea that I could actually ‘wear’ out the paint finish on the gauge cluster after a mere 6000km, I put forward to the assessor the possibility that a ‘faulty’ finish may have actually predisposed the ‘wear’, but still the claim was denied. Since then, several independent repairers have provided quotes, but all have commented that the finish should not be so easily damaged. The latest repair quote came in at $4500 to remove, strip and refinish the components.
