Driveline back lash

I have been getting alot of back lash when I let off the accelerator and then press it again. I feels almost like a slipping sensation and then grapping. It does not make any noise and is much more prevalent at lower speeds. It does not feel like the transmission. It pulls hard and shifts normally. I figured it might be U-joints. But I would perfer to ask first. If there is anyone who can give me tips on repairing... it would be appreciated. Another symptom is alot of shaking in the engine when I am turning over to start it. Once it starts it is smooth. This started happening before the backlash.

FYI it's a 96 SE with an Auto 116k miles.
