So, has anyone else noticed a faint whine when they ease off the accelerator? I notice it particularly in 4th gear.... around 2500 RPMs. It is NOT the engine slowing down. It happens when the acceleartor is still pressed a bit.

Anyone have any idea what that might be?

My V is a 6MT 1.8S

My 1992 Stanza does that, especially when the gearbox runs dry.

Comming from someone that rides motorcycles, it sounds like normal gearbox whine to me. I think it's noticeable, because most cars have more tire noise and wind noise so you don't normally hear it. It's mainly chatter. When the gears have a load, the noise is dampened and the engine noise masks the sound. As the gears are unloaded, the sounds are not absorbed and gets transmitted. You normally can't hear this with helical cut gears, but maybe the design is less typical ot save space. Motorcycles use striaght cut gears, so it can be heard easily over a stock exhaust and wind noise under 50mph.

Not all cycles. Newer Harleys and Vics use helical gears.

I'm more familiar with transmission on smaller motorcycles. Although my BMW might be helical cut, but you can still hear it. Might be the quiet stock exhaust.
