hello,

car: 1990 Axxess, KA24E, 2WD, M/T, +233k miles.project: CV joints & boots.

I need to replace the wheelside joints and boots. The boots have been split for a few months. Atleast one joint is very dry and "clicking".

The motion of the slide joints are very good and the boots are in tact. I'll replace them anyway along with the power steering boots (one is split).

dilemma: -Right side- I have removed the right drive shaft with support bearing but I can not get the wheelside joint off of the shaft. I'm using a 5lb. slide hammer. edit- I got it off. I just needed to make a different bracket for the slide hammer.-Left side- I cannot get the left side out of the trans. The manual shows to pry the slide joint away from the trans case. This is not working for me. Is it possible to tap(pound;) ) it out from the right side? How much force is usually needed to do either?

I think that's all my info. oh yeah, factory clutch. woo hoo! not bad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Ken

The driver's side axle has a clip that holds the axle in place. Pry between the axle and the transmission case with a pry bar. It will come loose, but it takes more force than the passenger side. The passenger side doesn't have a retaining clip, which is why it comes right out.

EZ,Thanks for the quick response, but it's not budging. The illustration in the manual shows a hand prying with a screw driver, lol. I had my foot on a 18" pry bar while pulling the axle with both hands, lol. Those ring clips are stubborn.I think I'll ask a dealer to get a peak at their exploded view fische(sp?) to see if what I'm looking at from the right side is indeed the end of the left axle. If it is, then I can try tapping it out from there.

Any other suggestions?

Ken

yeah.....here's my suggestion:

Get a longer pry bar. I usually use a crow bar. 18" is probably not enough leverage.

Also, pulling on the axle will not help. You are just going to pull out the CV joint and the axle is going to stay stuck in the transmission. Just try the prying method, but use a larger pry bar. Also try to give it a quick jerk with the pry bar, rather than simply pushing harder and harder.
