I purchased a 2012 m56x about 7 months ago. The previous owner.... well let’s say I am doing work. I have a rattle under the car and I figure it’s the heat shield. That’s what it was on my m35. The problem that is bugging me is the drive mode selectior does nothing. I thought I could be a fuse but then I figured something else would also be out not just that. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? No matter what position it is in I get no induction on the dash.

The factory service manual has a dedicated section for the drive mode selector, complete with detailed troubleshooting flowcharts. Some of those steps require a CONSULT-III but some do not, and you can probably rule out some basic problems without it.

The manuals linked via this site don't appear to have the DMS section for 2012 models, but the 2011 documentation should be close enough:

When you rotate the selector it should tell you the mode your in between the two dials, aka speedo and tach.

If that doesn't appear i would first attempt a disconnect of the battery for about five minutes. It could of had something freeze up.

After that it would need a deeper looking into but I would definitely start with that.

Good luck

I tried that and it still does not work. I disconnected the battery, left the doors open and operated switches in the car just Incase any capacitors held any residual power. When I reconnected I still do not get any indication that the switch is changing drive modes. Thank you for your response

Mine stopped working when I blew the 10amp fuse labeled 'elec. parts' in the fuse box by your left foot. Check your fuses again. A lot of other stuff was affected for me, but I'd just double check. I think it was the 4th fuse down from the top on the left side.

Thank you I will try my fuses again today and reply. Hope it’s that simple.

On your heat shield rattle - I've had it a couple of times. One time it was a loose heat shield bolt, tightening it up fixed the rattle. The other time it was little rocks and pebbles after winter that were on top of the shield and causing the rattles. I used a refrigerator coil brush to get up their and clean it off.

Did the fuses again you have to be a contortionist to get to them but they all checked ok. I will try and find the rattle again I checked the shields on the under side will check the engine shields next time. Thank you once again

So the selector is still not working? Odd, not sure what else would control it.

No it’s not. The DCA works I was a little over zealous in the highway ran up on a truck to fast and the pedal pushed back. So I know that part works

Very strange...at this point I'd say check your engine bay fuses too, there are a few...this car is weird and some things are tied into others that you wouldn't expect.

I checked them they were fine. I ordered a new selector switch. It was about 70 dollars just waiting on it to come in.

I bet with the proximity to the cup holder. The selector switch might have gone for a swim at one point.
