I got a 89 240, stock engine, and i've got a belt squealing issue. In the morning, when i start up my car, its probly around -10, one of the belts squeels after about 10 seconds after start up. I give the car about 5 minutes to warm up a bit, then start driving... as i turn out my drive way my power steering cuts out abit, and a belt squeals even more. Then once i get her in first gear and start going a belt squeals even louder. Then after maybe 3 km the sqealing stops completely, then power steering works fine in any radius of turnng, and we're good...

* also my lights dim on and off sorta thing while i'm ideling sometimes, or decelerating. Thought it was the alternator, maybe it is, but i've been driving around for 4 months now, and that piece is still running.

I do not enjoy driving around passing all those high schoolers with my car squealing like that, its embarassing! maybe someone could point out something i could do to fix it. I simply dont know where to begin.

Sounds like your alt. belt, and your P/S belt.

Take a look at them and check what condition they are in.

Also check your p/s fluid level; if it gets low, sometimes the belt can slip with the increased resistance.

power steering belt fluid is good... whats the rule on checking belt tension tho?

P.s shouldnt the alternator have died by now! its shown signs of failing 4 months ago, yet it keeps pushing. Maybe a loose alt belt is diming the lights...

look up belt in tutorials. get a bar of soap and rub on alt belt from underneath car for 30 seconds or until belt stops squealing. then you know for sure which belt. if new belt dont help you need new alt. check belt tensioan also
