My dealer says that I need to replace the drive (serpentene) belt on my 08 Rogue because of cracking. The car is 3 1/2 years old with 65K miles on it....does this make any sense? I have never had a belt fail on any newer car that I have had before 100K miles

A lot of cars could have a bad drive belt before 100k depending on weather condition.
but be sure its cracked, check it your self first. Our Nissan dealer said our brake pads on our Murano had .2mm and said it should be replaced and I said I'll just DIY. Then kinda startled when I said that. When I replaced it, it had well over .6mm and that was 3 months after they told me. I wanted to B$#$% at them so bad... but I don't have time for that. I Do have proof cause all the calls are recorded.

Daytripper,

I replaced the drive belt on my Rogue at ~55,000mi. Yes, it was well worn and it's normal to replace them at that interval (it varies depending on driving conditions).

Since the Rogue uses a single serpentine belt that drives ALL the accessories, it's critical that it be inspected regularly. A broken belt will leave you without a working alternator and water pump and could leave you stranded on the side of the road.

0.8 hours according to the guide I have.

Here are the steps from Nissan:

Removal and Installation
REMOVAL
1. Remove front wheel and tire (RH).
2. Remove front fender protector (RH). Refer to EXT-22, "Exploded View".
3. Hold the hexagonal part in center of drive belt auto-tensioner
pulley with a box wrench securely. Then move the wrench handle
in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner).
CAUTION:
• Avoid placing hand in a location where pinching may
occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.
• Never loosen the hexagonal part in center of drive belt
auto-tensioner pulley (Never turn it counterclockwise). If
turned counterclockwise, the complete drive belt autotensioner
must be replaced as a unit, including the pulley.
4. Insert a rod approximately 6 mm (0.24 in) in diameter such as
short-length screwdriver into the hole of the retaining boss to fix
drive belt auto-tensioner pulley.
5. Loosen drive belt from water pump pulley in sequence, and remove it.
INSTALLATION
• Never loosen the hexagonal part in center of drive belt
auto-tensioner pulley (Never not turn it counterclockwise).
If turned counterclockwise, the complete drive belt
auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including the
pulley.
2. Insert a rod approximately 6 mm (0.24 in) in diameter such as
short-length screwdriver into the hole of retaining boss to fix drive belt auto-tensioner pulley.
3. Hook drive belt onto all pulleys except for water pump, and then onto water pump pulley finally.
CAUTION:
• Confirm drive belt is completely set to pulleys.
• Check for engine oil, working fluid and engine coolant are not adhered to drive belt and each
pulley groove.
4. Release drive belt auto-tensioner, and apply tension to drive belt.
5. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise several times to equalize tension between each pulley.
6. Confirm tension of drive belt at indicator (notch on fixed side) is within the possible use range. Refer to
EM-16, "Exploded View".

Hello,

According to the maintenance schedule the belt should be replaced at 60K. Of course this item depends a lot on environmental factors depending on your area this could be sooner or later. I replace the one on my 2010 Altima at 104K and five years. The dealer wanted to charge me 300$ to replace that belt. Of course i ended up investing 1 hour of my time and did it myself is a pretty easy procedure, since is an auto tensioner.(Check the FSM section). On the rogue should be easier since there is more room to work plus you wont have to lift the car, to get under it.

Good luck.i recommend you the get an extra hand if you plan to do it yourself. I will be way easier if someone helps you to put the belt on the alternator (last step). while you retract the tensioner.

you should have a right to request any replacement parts returned to you by the servicer.
though it doesn't mean that they can't do something to the belt before returning it to you.
unless you are on site watching
