I drift my J whenever it rains or snows. The J is just too heavy with the auto slushbox to get it sideways on dry pavement without throwing it really really hard. The leather seats don't help much either with being able to control the car. I would like to do the VG30DETT swap with a 5 speed and then I bet I could get it sliding very easily.

There's a TT J30 for sale right near me, I'm sure that from a power standpoint, it's driftable.

I think that you'd run into trouble with the stiffness of the suspension however, stock luxo-car suspension typically produces too much body roll to be able to really drift, although I'm sure you could stab the throttle and swing the tail out a bit on corner exit.

Another problem would be the automatic transmission, which isn't the best thing for staying in the powerband, which you need to do to sustain a drift for very long.

At least the cars come with VLSDs, since the J30 diffs swap into S-chassis fairly easily, are we to assume that aftermarket clutch-type differentials would be a fairly easy drop into the J?

If you could find away around the suspension problem, I suspect that a manual trans wouldn't be a huge issue, certainly not as hard as trying to mate some sort of manual to a VH or something.

It'd be a serious project, that's for sure, at least if you're talking about real drifting and not just parking lot buffoonery.
