What's up, I am having a hell of a time with this. read the long one where the guy describes how to learn how to drift using one cone and then two.

http://forums.freshalloy.com/u...56222Help a drifting newbie out!

Damn, all I could do was drive circles around the cone, I couldn't really get the back end to swing out enough. I ended up giving up on that and going around the parking lot a bit, but I want to find out if there is another way to do this or if I just need more power, or if it's just me and I suck. 1995 sx/se, no lsd, bone stock, avs es100s up front, michelin energy in rear

if it's a 5 speed rev up and kick the clutch or yank "E" and turn the wheel at the same time, then gas it. If it's auto, then try yanking "E"

yeah, I tried that again last night, but maybe some of the others are right, I need an lsd. it sounded like it was spinning up back there, but it felt like I was only driving in figure 8's around the cone, not really drifting.

I drift my car all the time around Orlando. I get my car so sideways I have to look out my side door window to see straight! :D

Who needs an E brake when you have torque!

To tell you the truth, all you need to learn is a damp/wet parking lot. Works even better if there is a layer of ice. Another way is under excelleration do a swift yank on the wheel towards the turn...this will kick the rear out and it's all up to you to balance the car on the edge. Another techinique I've been learning: do a slight quick turn opposite the direction you want, then immediately do a swift turn to the corner which completey breaks the rear loose. It's all up to you from there. This is the technique I've seen in WRC and I've been practicing it since.

Or move up north...the snow will teach you one way or another

gr56a is right. if you are just learning how to break the rear end loose, use a wet parking lot with lots of room. my stock s13 would break loose in a heartbeat. my s14 now does a great job of it since the 13 got sold yesterday.

the way i typically do it is to pour on tons of throttle just before the apex of the corner. when you hit the apex, you will be looking directly at your a-pillar so be ready for it.

yeah, and I kinda like the wheels, too...

Damn, I'm kinda worried now, I'm hearing some weird stuff sometimes comming from my suspension... when I put on the brakes going pretty slow, sometimes I hear a clunk from the drivers side, and my steering wants to follow every bump in the road...

I'd suggest you get some actual driving expierence, whether it be auto-x events, private driving schools, or HPDE sessions. You'll learn how to setup a balanced car, and how to induce and correct over steer.Who knows, maybe you'll actually like giong as fast as possible more than drifting.

yeah, been doing that, (autox) but people aren't really as friendly as they say, mostly get vague answers and "well, your car is different", etc. but the 240 guys are cool, and the dsm guys are cool, (I used to be a DSM'er, hehe) but they don't really care about suspension. the week before the drift event in Houston, I'm going into a driver's edge event, if I can afford it. ($275, oww!)

I'd like to set up another thread later about an suspension upgrade path for the beginning drifter. I've looked through a lot of forums, and people just have a lot of cool stuff on their car without explaining how/why they chose what they did. Also what order to do things in, what you need to start, improve, and get better, what will break, etc. also, hopefully something that will help the intermediate, and maybe how to change out some suspension components, ie. control arms, tie rods, etc. what do you guys think? I'll probably do this tonite/tomorrow, unless someone has the same questions and wants to take the reins...
