my local drift group (KCDA) is having an event in July. I have a vert. I'm just barely scraping up enough money for the transmission and clutch. I think they need me to have a roll bar. How much do you think it would cost to make something acceptable for temporary event use? I heard somewhere that a miata bar fits perfectly, has anyone else heard that and how would i mount it?

the miata bar fits in there but I dont think it will be accepted as a roll bar if the drift event requires it. A member here has one installed on his vert, but I think it purely for aesthetics.

Definately need 4 point for events in a vert. Mine should be about the same, I am using an Autopower rollbar as my main hoop out of a FB RX-7. Just needs to be cut down, but it fits amazing.

I'm not sure whether or not that would actually pass any real tech inspections... It appears to me that the only thing holding it down are the tabs on the end. If that rolled, the tabs would be worthless as would the roll bar. It sure looks nice though.

its just for show then it will serve its purpose but for real support there would have have to be some major modifications done.

yea, sci2000 said that it was just for show, he said he can pop it on and off in a jiffy. It sure does look slick though.

Could it possibly be combined with this:

and would that help anything? because that would be flippin awesome

What if you reinforced the bar? Like with piping coming off of the top of the loops, going to the back and being welded onto both?

And both sides being welded on instead of bolted on?

You should just go get a cage made for you car instead of hacking up thin wall miata ''roll bar'' that will just collapse and fold over on you. If your throwing the car sideways your going to need the extra rigidity and safety that a real welded in cage will provide. One idea i have for you is to go get half a cage built, the main hoop and the rear bars. When you get more cash you can add the halo, pillar bars and the door bars along with it. Just a thought.

But i will say getting a cage done is nice. When i first got my vert it jiggled like jello, i couldnt believe how much the chassis flexed! especially on a unibody car!... so i put a cage in it. lol didnt even have the car a week before it got caged but oh well. I'll post pix when the car gets to be further along as for now i will be an "E thug" and tell everyone else what to do.

Hey man, nice to see a new member. And yes, we all know that a full cage is going to solve all the problems. But I think he was looking for something that wasnt as drastic. In my opinion most cages make the vert look like a jeep and if we could get the miata roll bar giving structural rigidity it would be sick. Do you know if the miata thing will work if it's combined with the bars on the black vert I posted earlier? you seem to know alot about cages. thanks!

thats what im trying to get done. the car is not really going to see any sideways action. so its mostly just for looks. but if it could be reinforced that would be awesome too!! i'll buy it soon and see what i can do with it. since its going on my soon to be sons car it will be a good father-son project!!!

hahaha, lmao. I'm a tax claim! My mom gets mad at my nightstand made out of wheels claiming that "car parts are outside objects, this is inside!" so she never considers my room clean because of that hahaha

ok, i still wouldnt want to run the miata bar because i am afraid the material would be too thin in the event of a roll over. a bolt in unit could be fabbed to fit your car though. check out the s13.4 that just posted pictures, you could replicate that to bolt in by having a main hoop made that bolts into the floor via 6x6 plate on top and the bottom, not the side of of the car like the miata bar. the miata mounting could easily break the bolts you use or rip the bar right out of the sheet metal you mount it to. for the rear bars you make the bars slip into each other (like an auto power or cusco type cage) and held together by a high grade bolt, once again bolting into the floor with plates on both sides to keep it from pulling out of the floor.

and if you like the style of the miata bar, your fabricator should be able to replicate the bends. i hope this helps, i dont want to sound like a snob i just dont want to see anyone het hurt in a 240.

thanks alot for the pics, thats a beautiful vert. How hard is that conversion? is it just getting the parts and bolt on like the silvia conversions? or is there some actual fabbing needed?

Anyhow not to hijack, as far as the roll bar goes, i wonder if making some kind of bracket to hold a removable hoop would work? I'm not to sufficient on what will hold up or not but is something like this feasable? that way you could have the look without the hoop but still have a hoop for racing purposes. It wouldnt be hard to have a bar made for this.

woooooooah, lighten up man! its the vert forums!

i would most deff skip this event, or atleast show up and find out what is required, but doing a full cage for a daily driver usually isnt the smartest idea, i saw on a forum where a guy dailyed a full cage, got into a wreck, and smacked his head on the d.s of the cage and ended up worse than if he didnt have it caged

Keep in mind this is STARBUCKS speaking, he has a tendancy to react like that about everything.

and about the s14 conversion, he said something about combining the front of the s14 fender with the back of the s13 fender or something like that. I think his username was 110octane. theres another member in the process of doing the same conversion, s15ns13vert, I would ask him for any other help. here's his project thread: zerothread/324356 hope it helps,

its not a daily. i have to make it to the event because its my group's first real legal event. before this we had to drive to saint louis to drift legally and there they let you drift with the top up if you have no bar which really doesnt do anything.
