So I plan on getting custom rotor paint the same as my car. Meanwhile I'm dremeling away the old paint. I notice the calipers are shiny chrome steel underneath. I have never seen calipers this shiny brand new personally.

My question is, should I be cleaning/sanding this deep? Do the manufacturers purposely do something to the roters before they ship them why they don't come chrome/silver that I'm undoing?

It just occurred to me that its probably something to protect it from rust. Can someone confirm this?

Zinc coatings on the hat areas are common as is a spray of anti corrosion material. That's why the installation instructions normally describe a wipe down with Brake parts cleaner of the rotor at installation. The zinc coating normally is applied to the entire rotor and is worn off the friction surface pretty quick.

Depends what kind of tip you are using, but it is probably moving fast enough and is fine enough to actually be polishing the metal. Metal can get pretty shiny after all.

Sorry, I meant a shiny coating on my calipers...I'm dremeling my calipers not rotors. Can someone change that in the title please.

You're right. We no longer have the option to edit our own posts. Maybe PM a moderator to help with that.

As for the calipers, what you're doing is a great idea. The main reason I am not a fan of painting calipers is that the rough, textured surface shows right through the paint. Now that yours have a smooth surface, painting them should turn out great.

Editing own posts has a time limit ... after that limit has elapsed, edits are not possible.

Prevents the wmd problem of people deleting their old posts in a huff ... :(

And (pardon the obvious comment from me) please definitely use heat-resistant paint. Else you will not be happy later after driving the car ...

So I did it today...most at least. I have to take the calipers apart to get to one tight spot on each caliper unless I can find a thin dremel attachment. Anyone thinking of sanding down their calipers DO NOT do it unless you use a power tool or you'll regret that you even started. Even using the dremel this thing was time consuming. Or maybe it's just me and I'm an anal perfectionist. I think I did about 9 hours of sanding smh...rotated my tires while I had it up...and stripped my wheel lock key while I was at it smh. I know if I decided to do this by hand I would have stopped after 2hrs. My biggest issue was with the sanding attachment. I used a 60 grit and everytime I turned the dremel up to max (35K rpm) the sanding band would disintegrate after about 3 min. So I had to use the first setting (15k rpm) which is the main reason it took so long. I believe I went through 18 sanding bands. I think this will make a huge difference when I paint it, the calipers are soooooo smooth.

not to mention because of the caliper surface, it's actually hard to get the paint to stick good! (been there done that, won't do it again)

It's probably easier to just get them powder coated, lol.

Sounds good, but at a minimum of $350 plus the car out of commission for a week, that isn't worth it to me. Or Minimum $550 and new calipers, still not worth it. I'm already spending too much on wheels and suspension. I'll just take my time and see how it turns out. Easier is always more expensive lol.
