Mine will do the intermittent non functioning as well. I posted a while back that it seemed to be when the ambient temp sensor was reading goofy (falsely reading -50deg, etc) it would not turn on the compressor.
I've also found that the unit is less likely to work when the entire system is turned off, then turned on. If I leave it on vent all the time & turn the a/c on when needed, it cranks right up without the gremlins, so I leave it on vent all the time. If for some reason I have to turn it off, when I turn the vent back on and drive a couple of cycles (drive, shut down, return later) it will be ok.
