what is the easiest way to get most of the gas out of the tank? i dont really want to drop the tank dew to space in the garage. i was consitering removing the nosel where it attaches to the tank, after jacking up that side of the car but do not want to cause any leaks later on. and i also thought of going through the fuel pump opening. just looking for the easiest/safest way to drain around 10 gallons of old gas.

there is a drain plug int he bottom of the tank IIRC

if not, you can disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter and turnt he key on and let it all pump out into a bucket

or you can get a siphon hose and stick it down the fillter hole and pump it out till you get a siphon and let it go

with a 2+2 the gas tank will be in the rear bumper with the drain plug on the bottom, on the 2 seat models the gas tank is right behind the passenger and driver seats and in front of the differential. there are 2 drain bolts on the 2+0.

but your safest bet is the fuel filter at the front of the engine.

does anyone have a picture of where this drain is on a 2+2? i looked but did not see any, or maybe discribe the location? im not sure if it is a stock tank as the fuel pump does not sit exactly in the hole cut out in the spare tire area. not sure if there all are off set

the trick i used was to jack it up so the drain plug was lowest then just put a funnel underneath it that leads to your gas can

I know this was a really long time ago but how did it work out for you. I have to drain my fuel tank, I have a pump and wanted to put a tube down from where the cap is and pump it out that way. Is that smart? If not what tools should i get to do it the right way? And its a little over 1/4 a tank of gas what size container(s) should i get.

It'c not dangerous, it just wont work. the tank has an anti siphon system with some mesh and a couple of bends in the fill pipe so getting in is preety well impossible. Without dropping the tank your best bet (on a 2+0) is to pull the top cover (where the fuel pump mounts) and siphon with a secondary pump. Autoparts stores sell hand operated ones or you could just get any old automotive pump, run a hose into the tank and 12V to the pump.

Yea...it didnt. I came up with the idea to do it the quick"er" way by pulling the line from the old fuel filter and attaching my mityvac pump and line to it. I was able to pull all the fuel out of the tank put new fuel in and pull that as well. Then I added some fuel injector cleaner mixed in with about 5 gallons of premium and put it into the z. The problem is there there though. When it's cold it will run smooth but once it warms up the car idles around 500 rpms and sounds as if its going to stall out. If i try to move it it eventually does.

Sounds like a MAF issue, O2 issue, fueling issue, or vacuum leak. As soon as the car goes to closed loop (starts reading MAF & O2s) you start having issues. Read codes, check for vac leaks, ohm out injectors, checkMAF outputs, check TPS. All of these procedures can be found in the FSM. In the future if you want to avoid futile waste of time randomly chasing issues, review the FSM first, everything you need is in there.

All of the checks I described can be done with a cheap radio shack multimeter and a can of ether starting fluid. Not much you can do to diagnose that will be cheaper.

What do you think that noise could be? It sounded like it came from the CAS but I'm not sure that makes sense.

When i got home yesterday I let it warm up for about 30 mins before taking it for a long drive. Before leaving i tested the MAF which worked the car shut off immediately. I pulled all the coil plugs one by one and I could notice the motor sounded worse every time i pulled one. Putting it back make the more sound "normal" again.

I also did the ether test. I literally flooded the vacuum lines with the stuff and could not notice any changes in the idle of the car. Next I'm going to get a multitester and ohm the injectors. The last thing would be to take it to a shop and have them check the ecu for what codes the car is throwing and check the o2 sensors which im sure would come up with the ecu test...right?

I really appreciate all the advice i've been getting btw. Thanks.

You don't need a shop to read the codes, there is a manual way to do it (without consult), all you need is a 10mm socket and a flathead. The complete proceddure for reading codes is in the FSM, ecu is lovated under the wooden cover in your passanged footwell. Also when I said check the MAF, I meant check the output voltages on it, and on the TPS. And something else that completely slipped my mind. Check the ignition timing and reset your idle (IACV) before going any further. Procedures are in the FSM, sorry to keep saying that but as a Z32 owner you have to have either extremely deep pockets to pay the pros for everything, or very good study skills and a copy of the FSM lol.

Im going to go with the study skills and FSM lol...before i would browse it but now that I'm paying attention to what I'm reading its becoming really helpful with step by step instructions.

Yeah man, the FSM for this car is actually very good (compared to others I have seen) Nissan was actually proud of the Z32 when they made it and being that it was a fairly high class vehicle.
