Yup, it brakes the car while rolling to a red light. Still have plenty left of the pads at almost 60k miles. Money saved goes to 401kSVTCOBRA wrote:shifting into 1st going 20
The cars I've owned didn't like being downshifted to 1st.....pads are cheap, but to each his own.telcoman wrote:

Do you replace yours yourself?Tampa G35 Sedan 6MT wrote:I tried this the other night I got my G to go into 1st all the way to 40mph... I do have a new trans and clutch so I don't know if that has anything to do with it...
My jeep won't do it past 7-10 mph... I think the G is a sporty car and it allows you to do that.
I never need to do this because i drive to red line all the time and then need to go into 2nd and not 1st lol
Oh an Telcom.... Brakes pads can be installed on the G for about 50 bux... That is the cost of the pads, and you can do the labor in about 40 min....
Pads = 50 buxNew clutch = 1500 bux

My ultra-conservative mechanic buddy's opinion on brakes vs transmission/clutch is the same as yours!!! I had once asked him about downshifting to save brakes, he was like (My buddy's qualifications: Retired from the City heavy truck shop where he was a supervisor and master car/truck mechanic - now teaches diesel engine stuff at comm. college. He is also liscenced to drive anything AND also teaches classes on driving anything).Tampa G35 Sedan 6MT wrote:Pads = 50 buxNew clutch = 1500 bux

I don't think that most of us would do a clutch in our driveway lol..Kenrik wrote:Pads are $50 + 4 hours in your driveway
Clutch kit is $170 (stock) + a 18 pack of Heineken and a saturday under your car swearing.
Either is ok in my book.
I did a clutch on my 55 Chevy in 1961 and can still clearly recall the pain of the transmission on my chest trying to line up the spline.I was young and stupid back then. Won't do it againTampa G35 Sedan 6MT wrote:

But i would like to try if i only had to spend 170 for a new one and not 1500 at the sealership!

My ultra-conservative mech. buddy has a black 2 door 56 chey in his garage along with a 32 furd. He also cut the a$$ end off his 4 door 57 and had it turned into a loveseat for his back porchtelcoman wrote:

It took you 4 hours to replace your pads? I think it took me less than 2 hours to do the rears when I did them last and that included removing the wheels and pads twice because I didn't realize there were noise insulators.Kenrik wrote:Pads are $50 + 4 hours in your driveway

If I don't feather the clutch when engine breaking into 2nd, my coupe locks up my tires.telcoman wrote:Yup, it brakes the car while rolling to a red light. Still have plenty left of the pads at almost 60k miles. Money saved goes to 401k
