Just wanted to know if anybody out there does this too. I used to do this to my I-Vtech equiped RSX, but it seems it doesnt have that pop up top...do you guys just put it on 4th? which one do you think is faster-side note I have an 07 that redlines at 7,500

Just make sure you are rev matching and you will be ok. What were you racing that this was needed?

You may want to clarify your post. In an effort to try and answer what I think you are asking, the RSX motor has more top-end relative to the rest of it's powerband. It would feel like you need to keep it revved to get power. The VQ is both a bigger motor and not designed to provide as much high end relative to it's power. As a result, the midrange is much more forgiving if you leave it in a higher gear, but will still benefit from the torque multiplication of the lower gears. If you are asking which car we think is faster, do the math. 306 HP with about 3400 lbs or about 200 HP with 2800 lbs (Hint: divide the weight of the cars by the power). Hell, pick up a few magazines and look at their test results.

i-VTEC?

Sorry I always get a kick out of that. Like when Chevy F-Body owners refer to their cars as Cameros or when fellow Infiniti owners refer to their rides as Infinitys

sorry for the confusion...what I was asking was. which do you think would be quicker for a 350z to do when travelling at 65mph...downshift to 3rd or 4th? thanks for any input.....and yes I rev match

I-Vtech compared to the old Vtech is like VQ35 compared to the VQ37..if that makes sense to you

yes rev matching is important when downshifting, not sure where exactly the z redlines but most cars seem to reline second at about 60-65 mph, and third tends to be around 90 mph, depending on what gear you are already in and how much power you want and what part of the power band that particular gears yields it might be the right gear, really situationa dn driver dependant, I personally don't see needing to shift to 3'rd at 65 mph, I'd imagine cruising at 65 in 5th and making a 4th gear downshift for some spirited passing

Really dumb question... What is rev matching. Sorry, you guys are serious car guys. I just had a mid-life crisis at 31 and bought a Z. Plus my first car was an 82 280ZX and I have missed her every day since I sold her.

rev matching- it just means pressing the gas shortly before a downshifting to allow the motor to catch up with the cars speed. for example I am at 5th..I want to go to 4th..I simply just dont switch gears..I quickly bleep the throttle so i dont have no jerking motions...when I jump two gears I bleep it twice when done right downshifting is smooth...normally when you accelerate you see you revs go high then drop down when shifting...when you downshift this process is reversed...you would need to rev match to insure that the car stays stable, no herky jerky motions

I would say 3rd would be the fastest gear at 65. You'd run into problems in 2nd, and 4th won't have as much punch...though you'll be shifting from 3rd to 4th shortly.

I agree with Joe.. Mainly depends on you though.. if you shift down to 4th from 65mph you will be at about 3000 RPM's .. just test it out next time you drive your car ! !

He wasnt confused, he was giving you a hard time cause you cant spell Vtec (NO H!!!!) and alot of people do it... idk why. It seems pretty popular tho... and i wouldnt say its as different as the 3.5 and 3.7 but more DE and HR since its pretty much the same changes... lol... anyways im done ranting and showed a lil bit of my honda knowledge lol

vtec<--no H... vtech was a childrens computer company ...dont want to start nothin but the B series Honda engines are totally different than the new K series-so yes the comparison between the VQ35DE to the VQ37 is more accurate than the DE and HR comparison

But not in terms of the way Vtec works, yes the K-series are totally *** backwards but in terms of the way the Valve Timing goes its closer to DE and HR lol, since the older Vtec only had it on the intake cam and now the IVtec has it on both hince why i said DE-HR

...did you know the K series had a chain timing belt versus a belt; larger displacement from the 1.8 to the 2.0...the incorporation variable timing control; hence the "I" in I-VTEC(H)<-thanks...but you know what! im back in a Nissan so

hey, but you still gotta give credit to at least the older s2k engines with 9k revs

and its actually Intelligent Valve Timing Electronic Control, and in none of this thread was displacement brought up because they did have 2.0 basic Vtec engines and still have 2.0 i-VTEC
