As an owner of a few cars that have had some modifications, from my simple bolt on Celica, my turbocharged Integra, and my super slow civic (with nothing more than an exhaust) I have found that with every type of car there are certain down sides to doing performance enhancements. I'm wanting to drop an SR into my current 240 but want to know if there are any downsides to it... ie.. things to watch out for. I know on a Nissan forum that there will be plenty of people saying there is no down side, but I want every kind of feedback.

You know, some of the horror stories that people have had to endure and work through to make sure that the car runs right.

Thanks... hope this isn't a downer to anyone else.

What he means by bad head design is that at really high RPMS (redline) the head can sometimes.. kinda.. um.. come apart.. That's why Greddy makes rocker arm stopers for the SR.

Oil pumps can and do go bad..

Both of these problems are fixable.

its the stock motor that came in the cars in japan, so there is nothing bad about them except for the people that use them incorrectly.

Yup thats right...most people do mistune, or they dont tune at all. Other down sides are that though the SR has its home in the s13/silvia in japan, here it is still a hybrid, you have to play with wiring you have to alter the chassis and you are getting a motor that you dont really know where it came from. unless you rebuild it and replace everything, you never know what its been through in japan.

The head thing is a real issue, and if you are building a car for high power, you have to be extra carefull with temperature control because aluminum warps a lot easier than iron, and that is one of the reasons that many of us have head gasket trouble...that and turning up the wick prematurely. you should know that from building other turbo cars

The motor makes good power, the car is light and people who havent driven small rwd turbo cars can often bite off more than they can chew with 400hp monster 240s on the street as daily drivers. there is a such thing as too much power for these cars on the street,(never enough at the track) and in my opinion, the SR can make it

RAS in my eyes is the cheapest and easiest form of insurance/safety for your motor next to common sense....even though some people struggle with that

ive seen these motors put up with a lot, but if not properly maintained....as with any engine you are asking for trouble

wow this almost soudns like a horror story. but yeah as the guy stated above the SR is a good engine if used properly. like any other engine don't abouse it nad it will live long. However after reading all of this I am very glad I rebuilt my motor before droping it in. (ricer side comes outta me once in a while) so I would suggest. while the motor s out. replace oth front and rear main seals, upgrade to metal head gasket, but RAS. and if you don't stick with the mechanical fan, get some altima ones. the hoil pup should be good aslong as you dont continously pound the living hell out of your revlimiter and such. my .02cents

So far besides the oil pump the only downside is the whole bandwagoner cliche (thank you vin diesel and your damn tokyo drift)
