Has anyone tried to down mount a sub from below the rear deck? It would be directly below the rear speakers.

What would be the down side of doing this/ problems to overcome?

Are you talking about mounting it in an enclosure or free-air. If free-air, a sub that functions well this way would need to be selected. If in an enclosure, there is really no issue with doing this.

Be careful with the amp. Most do not have adequate cooling to be mounted inverted. If that is what you're thinking, it might have an overheating issue.

I would build a box and would be mounted to it.

actually you don't want to do that either. The vibrations coming from the box would actually vibrate the electronics inside the amp to where it pops a capacitor or vibrates an electronic part of. The best and cheapest way to mount the amp is on the back of the rear seats. If you frequently though fold down the seats, then you'll have to find a way to mount the amp in the trunk, possibly on those wooden covers near the tail lights. I've seen one guy mount his amp on 3/4 sheet of plywood cut to fit the center of his spare tire and the top of the amp barely touched the wooden spare tire cover.

I'm going to mount my amps on the back of the rear seats...more streamlined that way and neatly tuck the sub wires on the sides when I put in a 12" sub.

If you're looking to save a lot of space, you can go with custom enclosures by Q-Logic which can do a custom box tailored to your trunk. They're usually called fantom boxes because they fit so good, the average person thinks that there's nothing in your trunk.

Im going to have to disagree. The difference in vibration from the box to a rear seat at max 36" away is minimal to none. Ive had amps mounted to boxes before, I dont recommend it, but I have done it myself.

@OP, if you could give a better representation of what "I would build a box and would be mounted to it." means maybe we can help you out a little more. Do you mean hanging a box from the rear deck that holds the sub and then mounting the amp to that box?

well also one of the big disadvantages to mounting your amp on the box is if someone breaks into your car and they take the sub box, they luck out. At least mounting it on the side or on the back of the rear seat, it takes them longer to do it whereas if they just take the box, you've lost out big time!
