so i guess this would be considered general and not technical right ?... anyways

so when you go to register the car you need the pink slip, and the smog thing. do you also need the 'bill of sale' or is that not needed because you fill out the pink slip stuff. if thats the case then... heres my situation.

the guy before me never registered his car, so then he sold it to me. to register to the dmv it would be like a double transfer which they said requires two 'bill of sales'. what i have is the orginal pink slip filled out to the previous owner who never registered the car. and now i have a 'statement of error' that he said would correct it. and from the looks of it, its basically the same stuff on the back of the pink slip. SO... do i need the 'bill of sale' or is just using the pink slip and the 'statement of error' good enough. stupid dmv site is like giving me 2 different answers. any info is greatly appreciated, thanks !

pretty simple, i've done this with 3 cars already. since you live in california, this process should work.

they will give a form and tell you to get a signature from the person who's name is on the title to confirm he/she sold it to the next person, and the next signature from whom you bought it from to confirm he/she sold it to you. this is the is the difficult part as you need to go and search for signature.

so here's the solution. go to the dmv and tell them you can't get a hold of the person who's name is on the title. and they will give that form i mention, ask them "what if the person who's name is on the title decide to take the car back since it hasn't offically been register yet?, won't i get screwed", depending on how cool the person you're dealing with is, he/she will give you this paper that will solve all your problem. it's a form saying that you can't get a hold of the previous owner/s.

all you have to do is fill this form out, give it to the dmv, and just wait for a title to get to you. remember to mention the form i'm talking about since most dmv clerks are going to be ***holes. hope this help.

where did you get the statement of error from? i never heard of it. all you need is just the title to show to them and give the clerk a brief explanation of the situation. likely, they will give that form that's a real hassle to get signature no matter what you tell them. if that should be the case, then all you have to do is return the next day and say i couldn't get a hold of the person with the name on the title. then they should give the that hassle free form so you can get your title.

my situation was worst for my 240, the dude i bought it from register the car but his name wasn't listed in the data base for the owners list for the car, the guy he bought it from didn't register the car either but had his name written on the title as the buyer. so the dmv tried to make me get a signature from the person who's name is on the title, the 2nd dude who's name was on the title as the buyer, and the last guy whom i bought it from. that's 3 signature i was suppose to get but instead i got the easy way out.

i forgot to mention, all 3 cars i dealt with had people writing there name in the title as a buyer but never register, pretty much your situation.

i know what you're talking about now. even though you do it, chances are they might still need the name of the person on the title to sign it.

alright zombieman, your problem was like crazy compared to mine. i woke up at 6 to go to the dmv today, they opened at 730 luckily, and waited in line. i even forgot there are two lines  , and of course i wait in the WRONG one. so finally when they open up i go in and tell them, gives me a ticket number. forgot how much the dmv was like bingo. the voice calls a name and everyone looks at their number even if its like G010 and someone is an A003. weird... anyways, they took the title and the statement of error and said it was fine. what wasnt fine was i didnt have a proper bill of sale :(. i didnt have the seller's signature. other than that everything else was good. paid my fees and left.

i made sure like 5 times, "are you sure i dont have to get a signature from jack to dome, and not just from dome to me?" i think she got a bit annoyed. anyways, thanks for the help zombieman, really appreciate it :)

you know, that's exactly how I bought my car. I didnt really read the post, but what i did was have the guy who i bought it from come with me to the DMV and sign his temporary registration, and then transfer it in one fowl swoop over to me. Its alot easier to get the guy to go with you, but its gonna take a few hours at best... but also that guy had a dealers licence, so i dont know if its different there.
