I've seen it both ways.. Which one is right? Does the change from "o" to "u" change the word's meaning? Can someone with some actual Japanese background clear it up? Thanks...

It doesn't really matter since foreign words are just reinterpreted using katakana, but the general rule of thumb is that words that end in consonants end with "u," thus "doriftu" if you decide to romanize.

In japan land most people just say "Dori" because it's the slang for dorift(o/u). I'm pretty sure it's dorifto though. I just say dori dori and through up a peace sign with a goofy smile to ricers...and then they look at me wierd.

Dorifto = a foreigner's poor ability to emulate the English word Drift.

This thread = a Native English speaker's desire to be a foreigner with broken English.

Look man, I need to know what to yell when getting my car sideways. I would just look silly if i was sliding around a corner and pronouncing "DORIFTO_TIEM!" wrong. Banzi or YATTA would be just trying too hard. :D

if you start with "drift", and try to emulate it as close as possible in japanese, you get "dorifuto" "dorifto" is not even possible to spell in japanese"dorifutu" would actually be pronounced "dorifutsu" and doesn't mean anything anyway"dori" is the short version

Oh well, guess I'm going with DORIFTU. DORIFTO was already taken for a licence plate. I was just looking for something a little more specific since "I DRIFT" would make the older crowd think I was some sort of transient...

Yatta would be funny as hell... But it'd get really old really fast, and I wouldn't want to have to explain that one to people over and over...
