So this is my write-up for installing leds in the door handle and wiring them up to work with the dome light :)

supplies your gonna need,

and led, i used the oznium superflux led for mine.
a second person

a wire snipper

solder would be best, but i guess if you want you could use electrical tape without solder...

socket set, 10mm deep sockets, not shallow,

phillips screwdriver, and straight screwdriver, if you have a torx screwdriver set there are a couple of screws that are torx... for those of us without that kind, i used a straight screwdriver and got it out.

here are all the pics i have of doing this:
http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee19 ... %20lights/

remember to have your windows all the way up before starting this

so here goes.
step one: use this article to get the outside panel off
http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/removi ... anels.html

step 2: remove all the outer silver screws (there are ten i believe) and use the #10 socket, dont use a screwdriver, they are easy to strip out.

step 3: remove the four inner black screws.

step 4: clip off the upper left wire ties, not the wires themselves. to give yourself more room to work.
Image

step 5: remove the black covering over the door, to expose the inside of the door, and dont worry its a tad hard to get off because it is supporting the window in place, when you take it off the window will come down a few inches, thats normal, but dont pull up on the window and force it out of the frame.

step 6: remove the torx screw to the inside of the door handle, you can see it at the top right of the opening
Image

step 7: remove the torx screw on the outside of the door (where it meats the door-jam) underneath the little black protector
Image

Image

step 8: take the little piece off of the door handle thats to the left of the handle itself
Image

step 9: push the entire door handle to the left and the left side should come out, the right side will stay in.
on the inside of the door handle there are some cable plug ins for the little button on the handle, you can remove them if you need more room to work.

now the fun begins.

step 10: if your better than i am, on the inside of the handle are two screws, you can remove them... i stripped the one on the right out trying to get it off, luckily on the left side it came off just fine, if it doesnt you dont need to worry, its not necessary, just makes it a tad easier.
Image

do not skip parts of this step, read the whole thing before starting...

step 11: start drilling the hole, i did mine on the far right (where i am unlikely to touch) at a (roughly) 45 degree angle to provide even light, you NEED a pilot hole, so start off small and go up in size from there, i drilled on mine a total of 3 times. there are cables for the button for unlocking the door behind the black piece of the door handle, be extra careful not to drill into them, on the first door i drilled straight into them and it added about 20 mins onto the total time it took... plus a lot of frustration.

step 12: put your led in place and use some silicone to seal it up, run your cables through where the cables for the button are going.

now were gonna zip the door back up, im going to walk you through the door handle part because its the hardest part (for me) of this whole thing. i could not take ANY good pictures for this and so were just gonna have to do the best we can.

first things first, put the screws back in the handle part,

line the inner assembly up with the outer handle and push the handle in place like it should be, hold the outside like that and come around the inside and look at the piece you just pushed in, there is a silver claw like piece that hooks onto it, you remember how we slid the handle to the left to remove it? well guess what, were gonna slide it to the right to push it onto that claw, it will take several tries so just take your time, once you get it you will definitly know it, everything just feels really solid.

once you get that in place, put the torx screw on the inside of the assembly back in place

pull on the door handle and put the little piece in place thats left of the actuall handle, that piece holds the torx screw on the outside of the door in place, so now its time to put that screw in.

and so your door handle is now back together and your ready to run you cables, i just taped mine in place along the inner part of the ouside of the door, at the far left of the door is a place where all the cables go through, i cut a hole in it just big enough for the cable to stick through and pushed it though it and then through the door-jam piece, where you can just reach up and grab it and run it over to the drivers side however you want.

now i know one hard thing is putting the black piece back on the door, you almost have to have a second person for this,

i had person b hold the windows up where it should be if it were rolled up all the way, then i took the black piece and forced the screws one at a time into the correct holes, this takes time and a little patience between the 2 people.

once thats done you can assemble the rest back easy.

rinse and repeat for the drivers side.

and i know the door handle is different on the drivers side but the concept is the same, there isnt anything you cant figure out from how i explained the passenger side.

to get your power, in the a-pillar, for those who dont know what that is, its the piece that runs along the window to the roof, on the drivers side, start from the top and take the weather stripping off, then start prying the pillar off, there are som cables there ,were using the one thats white with a red stripe, and the white with two silver bars, the red being positive and the silver being ground.
run the cables down the pillar and through under the dash where you can now hook up the leds!

done. happy modding!

hope you enjoyed the article, thanks for reading!

Awesome write up. :bigthumb: What do you want as a custom title? Keep in mind "King of lights" is already taken by Phenom78 :chuckle:

I do agree with phenom, it is a lot of work for such a small mod, but when i press the button, as simple as it is, a lot of the passengers ive had looked at it and were like "hey thats handy" take into consideration, when i put mine in i had no intention of it being pleasing to the eye, where i am at there are no lights outside and sometimes i have to search for the handle, this mod was meant to be economical for me... though it turned out looking really cool too,

thanks for the comments everyone, hopefully in the future i can be a tad more innovative and not rip off someone else's ideas, im not the first to do it, but i am the first to tell people how to do it

Nice writeup!

Unfortunately guys, there are no longer custom titles. I believe sometime in the future we might have them back.
