In the original versions you did. I learned to type and spell playing the old sierra games. You had to be able to type fast enough to do things to enemies, and spell correctly because the game didn't understand typos. My favorite was the Heros Quest series which was later renamed Quest For Glory. It was more of an RPG than any of the others.
Sierra later re-released the old series' and made them more windows friendly. They encorporated a mouse, and did away with the typed commands. To me this made things much more simple, but it also removed what I used to learn to type and spell for the next generation. They also made all of the new games in the Windows friendly style.
I had almost all of em:
Space Quest seriesKings Quest SeriesPolice QuestHeros Quest/Quest for GloryLeisure Suit Larry Conquest of CamelotBlack Cauldron
I'm sure there were more, but I don't have time to dig out my old 5.25" floppies and 3.5" floppies to find out.
These were some of the best games I ever played, and I spent many hours playing them and never got bored. It was more than running around shooting each other, it required thought and patence and the ability to spell.
