I'm pretty new here and the world of pathfinders and Qx4's so i'm no expert, But that doesn't look good. Does it ride any differently?
How long has it been this way, you mentioned you got it checked out 3 years ago, what did the dealer say/do?

No worries everhart we had alot of members leave after the recall a few years ago since nissan did a buyback to scrap. I noticed the crack last year but the last few months much worse. Driving isnt noticeable but I hear grinding when turning at low speed. This thread confirms my issue
http://www.cheersandgears.com/topic/791 ... on-recall/

folks please check closely. The dealer claimed mine was fine and 3 years later it isnt. This is pretty serious.

They rot from the inside out, they probably just did a visual check on it.

I watched your earlier video (your first thread), but didn't comment on the crack.
Just saw this clip, and all I can say is, your Q is probably f****d. That sucks.
First thing I suggest is that you go back to the dealer and see if you can get a buyout under the recall.
It's not safe, and will only get worse.
Press them for every penny you can get.
I'm in Ottawa where we get even crappier weather than you do, so I've always oil sprayed my Pathy.
I just had it done again last week.
It has saved my ride. My mechanic said the same thing.
No rust under the truck, and the front end is still solid.
I have a few small patches starting on the edge of the rear wheel wells, but that's it so far.
I'm pretty grateful now.
Keep us up to date.
Fellow Canuck.
Go Sens.

Thanks buzzman, I think you are right. Im going to dealer tomorrow. I kind of am hoping for a buyout....I dont need my qx4. I store my mustang in the winter but my work is a 15min walk and I can use my wifes car for other errands during winter. I love my q but if its unsafe at any speed ill let it go and take the cash. Ill keep you posted, go leafs!

Im curious how this is handled in Canada, especially after the car had been "serviced" for the recall already

Hope you get a nice buyout offer

So I had recall service done in 2011 and they just did an undercoating on it. Now the rust is so bad thr car isnt safe, went to the dealer today and thry refuse to do anything since the recall was done. Shouldnt they be liable.....they said two years ago all it needed was the undercoating and obviously the rust was starting from the inside. Pretty angry right now

Ya I figured that would be the answer, Im going to wait until the truck needs to be totalled instead of just repaired I suppose

Maybe start calling NISSAN corporate and see if they can't get someone out there to take a look at the truck.

I would be interested to know what their warranty is on the repairs, if there is one.
Sounds like if they check it and pass it, then they're off the hook, even if it rots and becomes unsafe a year later.

Case in point: I visited my local wrecking yard yesterday (more on that later in a new post), and there were about 10 R50's in the lot.
None of them were damaged from an accident, and all were intact. Looked at them all, and it was obvious that everyone of them was a writeoff due to the rust recall. Some of them were really bad.
Here's the kicker: close to half of them had the metal repair patch on them. They had been "fixed" under the recall, and still ended up in the junk yard.
I'm actually going back there tomorrow, so I'll take a pic for you.
I feel your pain. Some of these junked Pathfinders looked like they had been well taken care of.
Shame on Nissan.

I emailed Nissan on the matter and am waiting for a reply. Buzzman, I hear you, I got a ton of parts for my q, there were about 4 in my local junkyard! GRNMACHINE its all good, the car has so much life in it but this damn issue may be its death. It is VERY unsafe, the crack is getting bigger and the grinding noise while turning is getting louder. I still drive it 1km to work and to the gym or groceries....using it as my getaround car while my Mustang is stored for the winters. Going to look for a replacement next winter I guess, but it would be great if Nissan stepped in. I basically put the blame on the dealer, questioning how they were trained to inspect and how there could be dozens of owners who think their car is safe but it is a deadly accident waiting to happen. Im ready to write my story and slander the dealer and post it on every R50 i see. Had they did a proper inspection maybe that patch could have given me a few more years.

Could you share what local junkyard has R50's? Was it a pick n pull? Im willing to drive!

Im thinking your best hope in this situation is for Nissan Canada to contact you (or you get a contact number for them) and try and discuss a buyout offer for them buying the car from you and getting it off the road.

The junkyard is b&d in oakville (just west of toronto)....pick and pull....that was a year ago though. Nissan contacted me back today and said the problem is between me and the dealer and they cant intervene.

"We wish to acknowledge your recent correspondence regarding your 1999 Infiniti QX4. We regret the circumstances that prompted your email.

At Infiniti, we take pride in the quality of our products and your satisfaction is vitally important to us.   Infiniti manufactures parts and vehicles to stringent standards; however, we cannot predict when a component may fail.

As we were not a part of the discussions or inspections that you had with the dealership, it is difficult for us to comment on the matter and regrettably are not in a position to intervene in what is essentially a dispute between yourself and Oakville Infiniti.

Again, thank you  for your feedback, and we appreciate the opportunity to respond"

After seeing this post I went to re-check my '02 QX4. The Infiniti dealer did a level 2 repair on both sides back in August 2011. However, after looking at the wheel wells again the other day I noticed the rust coming back! It's starting to bubble from the inside out! eeek! I'm gonna bring it back to the dealer when I'm home for winter break and see what they say...

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's 15 years old. It's been driven in one of the worst environments in N. America.

I just don't see how one can blame Nissan for corrosion issues after 15 years.

My brother has a '96 Accord, he barely takes care of it, it's been through 7 more brutal winters than my '02 QX4, and it's NEVER had any rust/corrosion problems. Nissan did something wrong...

Same with Toyota.

My brother's 1991 MR2 and my dads 1992 Camry are almost rust free (only the previous bodywork is rusting on the MR2), they were driven EVERY winter.

My 1992 Nissan 240SX? Rust everywhere, and it's been in an area where it rarely snows since 1992.

Most 15 year old cars don't rust to the point where it is unsafe to drive, usually some light surface rust, that's about it.

You know there's something wrong when NX1600/NX2000's rear strut towers crack and break free from the body due to rust or when WD21's split in half while all the S10 Blazers are still going strong...besides that horrible fuel injection system.

Here's a pic of one of the R50's I was talking about (at my local wrecker's).
You can see the repair patch in the bottom right corner, and yet, it's in the junkyard due to that other rust through on the upper left corner.
There were others like that as well.

If Nissan couldn't create a repair that would last, they should have just condemned the vehicles if they were "level 2" rust stage. This is disappointing.

Recycled probably.
Your Pathfinder was once a '72 Pinto I bet. :)
