Is it worth it or not?

I have a car that doesn't run very well anymore and has been off the road for almost 2 years that I would like to get rid of. I'd also like to get rid of it with the least amount of headache. I know there are new rules regarding donating cars, which are BS rules if you ask me, so I ask would, in your opinion, would it be better to donate a non-running vehicle to charity for a tax write-off or should I just sell it as the parts car it is and pocket the money?

I donated my old B14 to charity. It was running, but not in the greatest condition. I got $600 in tax credit for it, which is honestly more than what it would have sold for, if at all. I'd say donate it; I went through the Kidney foundation. They get someone to tow the car away and mail you the tax form.

I ended up seeing the car a few months later in another town. Good to know that it was worth it at least.

Up until a few years ago you could donate a car to charity and set the value yourself when tax returns were filed. A lot of filers took advantage of this (me included) and appraised our donations at much more than they were worth. The tax law has changed and now the charity gives you a receipt with a description (running/non-running) and assign a value to it. Chances are you're close to the 25% tax bracket which would net you $250 on a donation worth $1000 and that is probably high for a non-running vehicle.

In summary, you can probably make more money parting out your car but it would be much simpler to donate it and be done with it.

If you're after maximum profit, I'd suggest parting it out, followed by selling it as a parts car.

If you're looking for minimal hassle, donation is probably the easiest. Many places will even pick it up from your home, but the write off value will likely be considerably less than what you could get selling it.

Thanks for the opinions, that's why I ask this stuff. So based on what you guys are saying I should go about it like this... Parts Out> Sell as Parts Car> Donate(last resort)... in that order.
