THIS is the creepy sonofab*tch that bit my aging Yellow Labrador last week....

Emergency veterinary and medication bill: $1600

Fixing the chipped stone on my back patio where we lopped its head off with a shovel: $60

Tossing the snake carcass over our fence into the desert and watching the ground squirrels get "revenge": Priceless.

p.s. Rattlesnakes are scary.

Glad to hear your dog lived, Greg. That's how my grandma's dog died (he was really old). Rattlesnake bites are nasty.

man that is scary... pretty good size for this early too. Shovel is a great snake killing tool normally its long enough your not in their easy strike range. Wear boots just incase though right?

My grandparents lived on North Mountain on the other side of the Point Resort, 7th ave and T-bird. Every spring as long as I can remember I killed a few rattle bugs. I used to mow their lawn, nothing like having one slithering around you while your trying pushing a mower!

You should have skinned it an made a steering wheel wrap for the Z!

Yeah, nature will do that. That is what happens when you decide to live in what was once a desert. Animals in Arizona are not to be f'ed with.
In the north-east metro area the worst we get is deer.

I hope your lab is going well...
Can we haz pictures?

Woah! Glad the Dog is ok. Got any pics of it?

You should have made a nice pair of boots out of the snake as a souvenir.

God snakes scare the s*** out of me. I knew a couple of people who lived in Arizona, not somewhere I would want to be. Having to check your shoes for scorpions every time you put them on.

Lol, do you really think all of AZ is like that? I live in Scottsdale (suburb of Phx) and have never even seen a scorpion in or around my house, or snake. All I see is the occasional coyote running down the street. They like to hang around the golf courses down the street, lol. We haven't ever even had our house sprayed for bugs.

But there are like two little lizards that like to hang out on our front porch at night and eat the mosquitoes. :gapteeth:

They like to hide in the grout spaces between our tile. Blend in really nicely. Heres a tip for you no scorpion is ever dead until you squash it. They lay there until something touches them and then they sting it and try to eat it. My Mother in law spent weeks in the hospital from a scorpion sting, it gave her pancreatitis.

I go out at night with a rubber mallet, black light and a lock blade and kill a couple scorpions almost every night.

People whining about AZ make me LOL.

No tornadoes, no floods, no earthquakes, no wildfires, no hurricanes, no snow, no sleet, no hail, no rioting, low crime, no rusting cars, low cost of living, no mosquitoes, no chiggers, some of the best sunrises and sunsets in the US, no humidity, 350 days of sunshine, no icy roads...

I've been here since '84 and have seen 3 scorpions, 2 rattlers and one rabid coyote (but I took care of his a$$).

BTW, it was 85 degrees today with virtually no humidity, a nice breeze, and the pool is warm enough to swim in.

Oh - and the girls are all wearing shorts and tank tops, and it just gets skimpier as the temp goes up. :dblthumb:

AZ sounds great except that the temps get over 78. I hate hot weather. If it stayed 78 all year round, I could accept it. But 120 or other extremely hot days, no thanks.

These were taken about 10 minutes ago. Sorry for the dark pictures, I'll get better ones tomorrow. He's just as playful as a three year old pup too. The vet we took him to gave me some vitamins to give him for the hip displaysia. Seems to be working, he's getting around a bit better. Considering he is 14+ years old (our best guess), he's doing very well.

IF only you could combine the climate of AZ with the no-deadly-creatures of OR...you'd have a perfect State. Wait...there already is one...it's called Hawaii.

But crap...high prices and tourists ruins it...

:( I love Reagan, he used to meet me at my car when I pulled up to the house, and would just wag his tail, couldn't give a s*** who else showed up with me, haha. Glad he's doing better!!!!!!!!

As for AZ, working on cars in Avondale we actually had quite a few mosquitos for about 3 months, it was pretty bad in the appt. garages. And I was stung by one of 3 about 1" long bark scorpions that were in our bathroom (was stung in the shower on my big toe) but never saw one snake. LOADS of lizards and geckos, but I dig those. Aside from the few scorpions I encountered, the worst things I endured as gobs of vicious spiders, my goodness, the lizards were never around when you needed them, and there was one big burrowing turantula in our complex that was big enough to make a noise in the gravel when it walked, scared the crap outta me or any of my neighbors that was out after dusk, cuz you'd hear the gravel move, and then you'd expect to see someone... nope, just a BIGASS hairy spider.

Now the girls... *day dreams* .... yeah... none of those there... everyone stay away for your own better good.

Umm, no.

Hawaii's climate is nowhere near ours. They get a crapton of rain, humidity and storms.

Our latest visitor. Greg found him in the pool skimmer this afternoon.

Image

He proceeded to jump back in the pool. Dar decided he was going to jump in the pool and try to catch him. (Not his brightest idea.) He finally caught him with the net and put him in a bucket so I could see him.

Image

He was pretty cool. He actually let Greg pet him.

Cliff notes: NICO headquarters is turning into Wild Kingdom, one species at a time.

Hate snakes ... wait let me clear that up I HATE SNAKES.

The best way to tell I've seen a snake? You'll feel my bad on your back as I push you towards it and me away from it <-- sad but true.

I lived down south and we used to see Water Moccasins ALL the time, but since we were out in the middle of NO where we were allowed to shoot them ... ahh being in Jr High was so much fun back then.

Hope the Dog makes a full recovery.

I used to play with those little bastards in my back yard when I was ~4 or 5. Not sure how I managed to never once get stung.

I lived in the Phoenix area as a kid (circa 1981-82) and i remember the PSA's about making sure to always wear shoes when you go outside. Because people used to think they could run to the mailbox in their bare feeat and would wind up in the hospital with 3rd degree burns on the soles of the feet.

I remember seeing snowflakes 1 time. They hardly even hit the ground.

We went to this church that was way out in the desert (I remember getting carsick on the hour ride just about every sunday)... anyhow, their were always scorpions outside the church in the parking lot. I remember we would try to drop rocks on them to kill them.

My favorite critters in the area were the lizards. We used to have them all over the outside walls of the house. I always tried to catch them.. only managed to catch one of them... ever... and my mom made me let it go.

Living in Denver (way out on the east plains) we had rattle snakes out in the brush. I heard them frequently, but very very rarely saw them. They wanted nothing to do with you. They would rattle away to announce where they were so you didn't come to them, but even if you did come their direction, they would take off away from you. Had a few snakes (not rattlers) in the garage from time to time.. they were always fun to try to get out.

Best critter in Denver was the prairie dogs. they are so cool! The pronghorn antelope were awesome too... Had to be in a car to keep up with them... they are rediculously fast!

k.. done with my wild kingdom memories.
