Lung Collapse Music that is blasted loud enough can actually pack enough punch to cause lungs to collapse, Reuters reports. Four such cases are detailed in the medical journal Thorax in which young men suffered a lung collapse, or pneumothorax, that appeared to be triggered by very loud music.

This happened to three of the men when they were at concerts or in clubs; the fourth man was in his car, which was custom-fitted with a 1,000-watt bass box because he "liked to listen to loud music," reports Reuters. A lung collapse occurs when there is a small rupture in one of the lungs that allows air to seep into the space between the lungs and the chest wall. The victim suffers breathlessness and chest pain. Small collapses may repair themselves on their own, but severe cases require a chest tube to be inserted in the lung to allow the air to escape the chest cavity. How does music cause the lung to collapse? The booming bass, which can be felt as a vibration throughout the body, may cause the lungs to begin vibrating at the same frequency and that can cause the lung to rupture.

In two of the four cases, the young men were standing near large loudspeakers when they suddenly felt intense chest pain. In a third case, the young man had suffered previous episodes of pneumothorax, and during a follow-up visit, his physician mentioned the possibility of loud music being the cause. The patient then remembered that two of the attacks occurred at heavy metal concerts. Lead study author Dr. Marc Noppen of the Academic Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, told Reuters that he suspects more cases of lung collapse due to loud music will now be caught by doctors who probably never considered this before.

I found this interesting, can you hear me?

Does that mean that I should take the two 16in drivers out of my back seat?

That's because Bose sucks.

I replaced the back 6x9s with a $20 set from walmart. They were 3-way roadmasters. They have a little less bass, but they mkae up for it in the mid and high frequencies.

Actually, I have to stereos in my car. . I have the factory head unit with aftermarket speakers.

Then I have a home stereo sitting in my back seat. It consists of a Sony Amp pushing 250RMS per channel to two Pioneer 16in 3-ways. This is all powered by a 600w RMS power inverter.

Wait a minute, you have a home stereo in your Q??

How the heck do you change stations? When you shut down the car dont you lose your presets? And where the heck did you put it? I need to see pictures of this!

I remember the factory radio on my Mazda 929 failing over and over again... I ended up using a battery-powered boombox until I could afford a decent stereo.

Then why don't people drop dead from a Top Fuel dragster or funny car making pass after pass? It's about the loudest thing I have ever heard, much louder than standing next to a jet aircraft.

Hope you're never involved in an accident - It'd suck to be killed by a big, cheap home speaker crushing your skull at 40 mph.

I'm not an audioscientist, so please pardon my ignorance...Even though the decibels from aircraft are higher, arent the vibrations different? With music (especially hip hop) you have a lot of very consistent vibrations at low frequencies.

I think it's probably not something that'd happen to anyone - Perhaps some people have a predisposition to it.

Possibly an audio-born form of epilepsy, where ambiance can trigger weaknesses.

Happened to a typewriter salesman in the old days. Had a portable on his back parcel shelf. He had to stop suddenly, typewriter didn't stop so suddenly and broke his neck.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that the Amp is hooked up to a tuner.

On Home stereo tuners, the presets are recorded in flash memory. Meaning that presets arn't lost when power is lost.

The two speakers take up the back seats. If someone could stand it, they could sit between them. The Amp and tuner are in the front seat. I know, I can't carry any passengers. I need to get a remote for the amp and tuner, then I will put them in the trunk.

One of the benefits of having a home stereo in a car is. All I have to do is take the cooler ful of beer and liquor out of the trunk, set the speakers next to the car, and I've got a portable power.

I've seriously done that.

there are no benefits to a home stereo in a vehicle. There is a reaosn why they are made for the home, and other systems are made for your car. I've had many, many car audio systems, all sizes of woofers, and tons upon tons of amps/headunits powering aftermarket speaker after aftermarket speaking. That is stupid. Get those things out of your car, and put something made for car audio in there.

Sounds like you must have rattled your brain a little too much.

I don't see the point in putting thousands of dollars into a car audio system. First modification I did was put new speakers in the place of those bose things that were in there. I paid a total of $40 for all four. And they sound good. Then, that wasn't good enough. I was looking at the prices of car audio equipment, and I was like screw that. I had an extra $1200 stereo system sitting around my house. Only paid $400 for it.

Nope, Don't have a rag for a gas cap. The rag didn't seal it. So, I used duct tape.

You've spent alot of money, havn't you?

I call it a car stereo. I really don't fell like spending +$1000 to get the same thing that I get now from my current setup.
