I have a simple question so please do call me stupid. What is the difference between coilovers and lowering springs?

A spring is just that...a spring.

Coilovers are a spring, shock, and usually a threaded body that is adjustable for ride height. Usually they shocks are adjustable as well.

Ground Control also sells springs with a threaded collar, so they are kind of like coilovers minus the shocks. If you pair them up with some adjustable shocks, you basically have a coilover.

Here are some coilovers.

First site I came to when I typed in "coilovers" into Google.

Well, I live in Denton, but I don't go to UNT. Actually, I'm moving to Colorado in a week, so I won't be in Denton much longer. I'm looking forward to some twisty mountain roads. There just aren't any fun roads to drive on around here.

Technically, a coilover is nothing more that a spring over the shock combo, whether the ride height is adjustable or not. The term is popularly used to describe a ride-height adjustable coilover though. Semantics.

However, the advantages of a ride-height adjustable coilover are that they allow you to set ride-height a little more carefully and allow you to adjust the cornerweight balance to optimize handling. If tou get a set that has adjustable damping, you get the benefits of changing the shock valving some as well.

I bought Racingsport1 (or something like that) coilover kit with the sleeves. I put them on and in my opinion they were no better than cutting the stock spring oldschool style. Unless I did something wrong...save up and buy the GOOD ones.
