Sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find situation that is a closer situation.

I have a 2001 Nissan Altima. When I first recieved the car the dome or map lights would come on when ever a door was opened and stay on for a few seconds and dim out when the door was closed. But now after a month some how magically they do not come on anymore when the door is opened. However if I reach above and click the switches on either side of the lights they come on and work just fine.

I am guessing somehow I accedently(in no obvious way changed a setting somehow to as how the dome lights would work).

Anyone come accross this and knows how to set it right?

Any help much appreciated.

You said that the dome lights have three switch settings correct?

Usually those switch settings are off, on, and door. Off is just that... always off. (usually the middle position)on is of course... always on. door corresponds with when the door is open.

Forgive me if I'm too elementary with this response... but let's clear up the easy solutions before we move to more complicated...

Before you open the door, try moving the switch to the back position. If it turns the light on (with the door still closed) that should be "on". If the light stays off... that should be "door". Then open the door. Hopefully that light will then turn on as the door opens.

again... forgive me if this is very elementary.

Let us know if this works or not. If it doesn't, then your issue is most likely with the contact triggers in the door. There should be little black triggers in the door frame that are compressed when the door is closed. It's quite possible that your triggers are stuck or defective.
