Hey guys, im doing an automatic transmission flush for a friend of mine who owns a j30, but ive never done a transmission flush on an automatic transmission before...so i got a couple of q's:

is it as easy as removing a drain bolt and draining the transmission, then filling back up? or is it neccessary to remove the entire bottom pan, and having it drain out that way.

will all the fluid drain out, or do i have to flush the transmission cooler lines or anything special like that (not sure if there if there is a transmission cooler, just figured)

how many litres would i need? not sure if he wants to do a complete flush, or just drain and fill...

ive been reading a little, and i know if it has more then 100 miles maybe he shouldn't do it....especially if the fluid smells a little burnt and such....any help is appreciated

Welcome to NICO.....

In Canada, I would recommend doing a full transmission flush with one of those 'complete' machines Mr. Lube has.

Due to the fact that you can only get about 5 quarts out by pulling the drain plug or dropping the pan.

I would drop the pan and install a new filter and then take it somewhere later to do a complete flush with a T-tec type machine so you can get all the fluid out of the transmission, lines, etc.

Actually, I would go a step further on my own car. I would change the filter and then run some Auto-RX in the transmission for 1000 miles and then take it somewhere and have it flushed with synthetic fluid. This is actually what I am doing to my Explorer and will do to my J once I'm done with the Explorer.

I don't know exactly how many quarts the J hold but it's somewhere around 10-14 quarts.

The J30 has a drain plug on the transmission pan just like on the oil pan. Pull the plug and you can drain about 5 quarts. Then you can drop the transmission pan by unscrewing the screws around the edge of the transmission pan. You might have to slightly pry it off to break the seal. Then you can get to the transmission filter which is held on by 3 bolts iirc.

Install the new filter, clean off all the old gasket off the transmission pan edge (with puddy knife), clean off the magnet in the bottom of transmission pan, clean out inside of transmission pan with lots of brake parts cleaner, install transmission pan with new gasket that comes in transmission filter kit, re-install transmission pan drain plug, measure how much fluid you drained out and refill with that much new fluid.

Take short drive then park on level surface, check for leaks, and with the engine running, check transmission fluid level and add if nec.

Wes over in the Q forum does that plus.

After refilling the amount that came out.Start the Motor, with the brake on put the transmission in all gears.then back in park. Shut the motor off.Drain the pan AGAIN. refill and repeat until the fluid coming out looks as good as what your putting in. If you dont your replacing only 5 of the 14 quarts.

I just waited till the next oil change and drained it one more time.
