I'm doing an engine swap on my 04 G35 Coupe. I purchased an engine listed as a VQ35DE and was wondering if this engine will indeed work with my car. I plan on swapping the crankcase/oil pan from my old engine. The reason I'm asking is the timing chain cover looks different from any other vq35de I've seen. Any insight would be very helpful !!

Is that a rev up motor (which I think it is)..... If it is then its not a direct swap. you need new harness, ecu and such. Rev up engines are also known to love to drink oil.

Thanks for your response but the revup engine has 4 camshaft position sensors. This engine has only 2, left bank and right bank. Instead of them being on the back of the heads this engine has the camshaft position sensors on the top of the valve covers (also something I've never seen on any VQ35DE.) Its the same application just a different location which should be no problem. My current engine has 250,000 miles on it. It still eats oil like its no ones business (1 qt every 500-600 miles.) I have the engine tick of doom. It Sounds like someone put a playing card on a bike wheel lol. After loads of searching it sounded like the ticking was an issue with the hydraulic tensioner and timing chain. I actually stole the tensioner out of this new engine and it was a perfect fit in the 04. Unfortunately it didn't fix any issues with the engine tick after running the engine for another 10,000 miles. She still runs but shes getting weaker every day. I really would like to start this project this weekend.

I've actually done some further hunting. It looks like the valve covers on this specific engine match the 2009 - 2012 Nissan Altima 3.5. I have an 05 Altima SE-R which I also compared this new engine to, but my Altima has the same exact engine my G35 has. So I guess I would have to ask instead if a 2009 - 12 VQ35DE from an altima will work in my 04 G35.

That's a tough call. Look through the FSM and see if the sensors are in the same spot and if even the same sensors and all. I dont know if you would need the ecu to go with it as well.

That looks like an HR motor, not a DE based upon those timing chain covers.

This is the VQ35HR. You cant even access the water pump on the HR without taking the entire timing chain cover off. Also it looks like the cam position sensors go directly into the timing chain covers right above the cam sensors on the HR. The HR also doesnt have a oil pan connected to a crank case like the DE.
