My wife took her '00 I30 for an oil change and the mechanic found the outer boots were split on both sides of the car. He told her she needed new axles. We do not hear any noises when turning the wheel lock to lock, no vibration on the road. How can I tell if he is trying to have us pay a few hundred for a $35.00 part?

Ha, I just bought an axle from pepboys for 60 bucks (right side) as I'm about to change mine myself.

If I were you I would jack the car up and take a look yourself. Depending on the situation, some people just replace the CV boot but now that axles are cheap, and the fact that once the boot rips open you can't guarantee there is NO dirt inside most people just replace the whole axle when it's ripped open.

As a matter of fact I just looked up your wife's car at pepboys it's 60 bucks for a lifetime warranty for there there axles. 60 bucks as in 60 for each side..

So if you can I would just do it yourslelf it's a pretty easy job....

It's easier to replace an axle then a cv boot.

I still have to replace my passenger one. I went with a nice quality Raxle thou.
