So I did the old timing chain rattle fix and threw new plugs in there while I was at it...now the car won't start at all. At first, it gave a little pop when I tried to start it so I set it to TDC and the timing was pretty off so I fixed that. Now it just cranks but doesnt turn over, and it smells pretty rich of gas after i try to crank it for a few seconds. Pulled the plugs, seemed like they had gotten kinda dirty so I cleaned them and tried again. Still nothing. Anyone have any suggestions?

Is the cam timing and ignition timing both correct?

The exact same thing happened to me. Turned out the crank angle sensor died somehow. Swapped it and everything's fine.

So I know this is an old revival but I've been out of town for the past few months so I kinda just left the 240 hanging...unfortunately now my timing markings are fairly indistinguishable. So heres my question:

How can I set the timing having no markings of any kind ??(this includes the crank pulley (previous owner installed an aftermarket one)) I know how to set the timing at TDC via the old long screwdriver down the frist spark plug hole trick. Any input?

I assume you mean you removed the guides and didn't replace the entire chain? Use the screw driver trick to get #1 at tdc then remove the distributor cap and make sure the contact is facing the front of the engine if it isn't remove the dist. and relalign the button so that it is facing the front, with that done if the car has spark and fuel it should start.

i had the same problem. it wouldn't start. Apparently at #1 tdc the rotor on the distributor was facing the wrong way. take out the valve cover and make sure its actually tdc for #1. make sure the cam lobes are facing outwards. if they're facing inwards its for #4. turn the crank 360 degrees and make sure the distributor is facing the front.
