Hello,

I tried searching and I found the answer to my question for a SOHC set-up, but that isn't what I have so it really doesn't help me very much!!

My question is this: I would like to try driving my 240 without power steering for a while and see if I get the improved feed-back that other people claim exists. However, since I can't just remove the belt in the DOHC motor, what are my options?

Is there an easy way to disengage the power steering pump from the rack that doesn't involve squirting fluids? Thanks very much in advance!

I thought that might be an option.........however, wouldn't that eventually ruin the interior pump components? I guess I wouldn't be testing it for long, maybe a week or so.

Any other suggestions, or is that the only feasible alternative aside from actually removing the pump and sourcing a belt for the water pump?

I wouldnt see how this would give you anything but negative results...

If you suck out your PS fluid you are basically gonna make it so you can never have PS again without a complete overhaul..... The PS pump will die, hoses will crack, and the rack will dry rot..... Part of what keeps the system running right is the fluid, which keeps everything moist and pliable... Thats assuming you leave it out for a long time....

IF you run with no fliud, the pump is gonna make this GOD AWEFUL screech all the time.....

I suppose you could fill up the pump wiht fluid and cross over the hoses so its just circulating that little bit of fluid...

elwesso,

Thanks for your input. I assumed that the pump components would be damaged if I sucked the fluid out, but I didn't even think about the "out of fluid" whine that I would get to boot!

It sounds like recirculating the fluid through the pump might be my best option. I'll break out the FSM tonight and see what I can come up with.

Thanks again!

Whatever you do, make sure that there is fluid going through the pump AND there is fluid in the rack too!!! If you do these, it shouldnt be too hard to hook it back up to PS (which you will probably end up doing)

Zing,

That is what I first though, but it requires pulling the fan off, the radiator out (for clearance), the alternator belt off and the crank pulley off.

It seems like the best solution, because if I like the feel of no power steering than I will just remove the pump, purge the excess fluid and cap the lines..........but it's just so much work. I was looking for the easy way out!!
