Hey, have any of you guys ever done a full timing chain replacement (both chains, tensioners, guides, gears) on a dohc? Do I really need to remove the head like FSM seems to indicate?

I've only replaced the upper tensioner, but no...people replace the whole thing without pulling the head. You *do* have to drop the oil pan to remove (I think it's two) bolts on the oil pickup that are holding the lower front cover on. This will require dropping the crossmember or lifting the engine slightly from below.

Be careful when you're removing both upper and lower front covers...the head gasket sticks out to seal the two covers and can easily be damaged since it will just be hanging out there.

I've never heard of anyone actually pulling the head to do a timing chain job (except a dealership).
