Ook I jus bought a 1997 Q45 (which i got for a super steal) Its very clean silver with black leather interior (no rips, so fresh and so clean clean ) anyway..i bought it knowin there was an issue with the motor. Now the problem is...at idle im gettin a ticking sound but when i start drivin it dissappears . It's only there at idle, or a low rpm and goes awayy. But the car runs fine..it doesnt smoke or anything. When i first went to look at it the guys told me it was a lifter, and im like noo wayy thats rod knockk, but idk im kind of confused now because it runs fine jus the noise is there. I took it to a local shop he said it was a wrist pin on the piston..worst comes to worst i change the motor and ill still be wayyy under value of the car after that . Im kinda thinkin/hoping thats not even the case either. I was wondering if the vh41de has the same problem with the timing chain as the vh45de? anyonee?? what do you think it could be?

Not really and 95% of VH don't have a rattle because the guides have been replaced.

Poor oil habits and failure to replace any brand engine's chain tensioners can result in start up noise until things warm to operating temperature.

Every 10-12 year old car has defects that the owner discovers, tries to hide, and sell away the problems. We warn used car buyers to expect to spend $3,000 minimum to retore to nearnew operating conditions.........some will need $10,000.

A steal is usually stolen if it is a true bargain. Otherwise watch out and bend over.

First thing I would recommend do engine flush and fresh systhetic oil afterward. If clicking sound still there you may have rob bearing failure. Other guy suggest lifter, I deal with lifter many times in the past from what I understand lifter failure when engine rev at high rpm, at idle you dont notice clicking sound at all.

The early Q45 (90-93) VH45DE 's had an issue with plastic backed timing chain guides, not a chain guide rattle. Very different from the KA24DE's rattle issue, both in symptoms, solution and consequences.

When the plastic backed chain guides were replaced 94-96 VH45DE's, there was no longer a chain guide failure issue.

If you're hearing noises, it's most likely due to poor Oil Change Intervals from a prior owner.

How old is the current oil?How does it look?Have you looked into the oil filler cap to see what (at least part of) the top end looks like?

Yea thats the first thing i did was change the oil along with some lucas..like 12 days ago. I jus checked the oil today and its still brown, not black at all. The car runs fine jus the noise is there... . Wouldnt the oil be black if it was a low-end problem? or am i wrong?

Lucas Oil additive: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/...s.htm

Are you sure its the timing chain, bearings or valves?

I would check other places too.

thanks for the link! I kind of didnt want to put additives into the motor anyway because, there's actually no leaks at all. And i dont wanna create anyy either. Im not sure if the previous owner rann synthetic or whatt. But my oil is definetly nice and brown. This is drivin my crazyy yoo lol bc the car runs good except for that noise every now and then its misses, and then it sometimes it doesnt. My check engine light came onn..i was told it was about the misfire and i needed a new catt. Im thinkin the misfire might be happening due to the problem with the noise if its the bottom end. the other day i was driving and the check engine light went off???lol but now its back on...weirdd.

If you have a miss you should pull the ECU codes. It's sounding like a coil issue.

I would be more concerned with learning to spell correctly than worrying about a little engine noise. Spell Check would be a good beginning.

Intermittent CEL's can often be an o2 sensor. Have you scanned the code(s)?

It could be HLA related valve noise. Do a search on HLA noise...there are a few threads out there on this topic. Oil additives or BG Quick Clean could help, but use only in moderation.

Cats don't cause a misfire, bad coils do. Which cylinder was the misfire in? Did he give you the code #'s.

I'm thinking that a misfiring cylinder may cause valve or HLA rattle?

I kno cats dont cause a misfire..u asked what codes came up and i said the cats, and a misfire. I never said the cats caused it..but yeaaa..i was thinkin the valve is gettin stuckk and causing it to misfire as well. Im not too sure what cylinder is misfiring, the mechanic and I do business together i sell parts to his shop, i can kinda tell he didnt want to be bothered with it at the time..but im goin to look into it more. He told me it wasnt a lifter but im def thinking it is..thanks for the help anymore would be good too.

as stated earlier, the previous owners poor oil change habits causing varnish to build up..

Use some BG quick clean and weekly oil changes for a month and see where that gets you..
