The thread title pretty much says it all. Winter is comming and I am looking at my stock open diff as a quick way to get stranded.

I dont drag.I dont call myself a 'drifter' but I do go have fun sometimes. My car is NOT a daily driver, but i will be forced to drive it occasionaly this winter.

how much of a difference can be felt between open and VLSD? Is it worth twice the money to get a clutch type LSD?

Thanks for the opnions.

VLSD will be fine for you... the semi lockers are for hardcore racing/drifting.

I went from open to VLSD recently. BIG difference in standing start acceleration. The car also pulls out of corners MUTCH better. It's way worth it...

I have a SR and the VLSD seems to be able to cope fine with the power i'm making (i'm in LS1 z28 territory in acceleratoin)

buddy of mine was telling me that i probably wont be happy with VLSD. Says that for burnouts or HARD acceleration you will still only power one tire and leave one tread mark?

Here lies the issue...

You have to have wheel spin for the VLSD to lock up in a straight line, cornering naturally thickens the outer wheel's fluid. The spinning plates cause the fluid to heat up and thicken which makes the diff have it's limited slip effect.

A clutch type is torque reactive. Meaning as soon as you apply torque it will be in a limited slip mode. Therefor it 2 wheels the whole time you have any torque applied to it. It also is designed to force the clutches together even harder when you apply more torque.

I always leave 2 marks. Even if you just jack up one side of the car and try to turn the tire there is still mad resistance. It seems to be enough to start both tires spinning in my car... They always end at the same spot too.

My diff is really tight however. When i'm turning either direction from a stop i almost always get a little churp from the inside wheel right when i start to roll.

I have never had a problem with my 250 dollar junkyard VLSD. ;)
