2003 QX4, approx 175,000 miles

Background: my independent mechanic replaced a coolant hose, then another started leaking, in the end, he replaced every coolant hose and/or clamp and in the process had to access below/behind the engine so took of some parts off, not sure which. Although I have not driven it yet, he says all the coolant leaks have been resolved and pressure tested again so no more leaking. But informs me of another new problem.

Now I have an IDLE issue of some sorts that I've never had on this car or any other. He was going back and forth with an Infiniti dealership and they eventually told him the car needed an IDLE relearn procedure, they told him to drive the car about 150 miles or so and it will reset and the problem will go away. (maybe because the battery cable was unplugged or other???)

First question: regarding driving a number of miles, everything I read about the Idle Relearn has nothing to do with miles driven, just the turn on/off so many seconds etc...("EC-57")

Car symptoms: after starting the car and warming up, it starts surging at about 1,500 RPM up and down. It can drive down the street ok and the car appears to drive fairly good. But the RPM's engine continues to surge in short brief surges at really any point but not all the time, i.e. when coming to a stop, while driving at 40 MPH, etc.. Also, if I don't press the break or gas, it idles at about 20 mph or so at 1500 rpms.

I'm trying to piece together the other threads with Idle type issues but does anyone have any thoughts? Need to to a Relearn Procedure, does it sound like I can get my car back to running ok again.

Sounds an awful lot like the bad IACV symptoms that have been going around a lot lately, though it could be a few other things too. Read through these and see if anything sounds right:

Is it throwing any codes?

Offhand, from what you describe, replacing the IACV and getting the ECM repaired would be the thing to do if the idle relearn procedure doesn't fix it.

In answer to your question: agreed. It's just a matter of on/off/warmup/unplug/etc. like the FSM says.

Thanks for the comments.

They replaced the Idle Control Motor. I'm pretty sure that is close to the correct name. Anyway, it's fixed it appears.
