My clutch is slipping hardcore.. would it be stupid to pull the entire motor/transmission to install the clutch or is it easy to do underneath the car.. i do not have a transmission jack, however i have an engine hoist.. it's also much easier to do while the engine is out... has anyone had personal expereince doing this themselves..

THE TRANSMISSION IS LIGHT ENOUGH TO GRAB YOURSELF IF YOU NEEDED TO. BUT IF YOU ARE LIMITED ON SPACE AND EQUIPMENT, I'D PULL THE ASSEMBLY.

I always pull everything out when I do my clutch. Less headaches trying to reach in there trying to get all the bolts out and the other pain is when putting the transmission on.

All you need is a floor jack and a friend to help you guide the trans out. There's no need to pull the motor, and the flywheel and pressure plate bolts are easily accessible. All you have to do is turn over the motor to reach a few of the pressure plate bolts.

All in all, pulling the motor is just a larger headache IMO. And requires a lot more crap to be removed/spilled than with just yanking the trans out by itself.

agreed. i would say the labor either way is similar; removing the engine takes longer but it not done on your back. but removing the engine means you're disconnecting all electrical connections all over the place and disconnecting charge pipes and draining the coolant, so in the end it will just mean more work. the car is designed so you can change the clutch from under the car. BTW, while you're there, make sure the rear main seal is not leaking and causing the clutch slippage. go ahead and change it while you're there.

the only reason i thought this idea might be better is because ive never installed a clutch before, so im flying blind.. but i did put the motor in myself so i know i could pull it out..

either way you're going to have to install a new clutch. just do yourself a favor and leave the motor in the car. as a bonus you'll learn how to do something you didn't already know how to do which may come in handy later - remove the transmission. it really doesn't take very long from under the car.

i just can't justify pulling the whole motor and trans out to do a clutch. it takes me a good solid couple of hours to disconnect everything associated with pulling the motor and to have it swinging on the hoist. However, 30 minutes to an hour tops to get the transmission on the floor.

right on. exactly what i mean. just take it out from below. the car is designed for it .

I just like pulling everything out because just in case I missed something I can always replace a hard to get to hose or something hard to reach when in the engine bay. Better safe than sorry? And besides it's easy pulling everything out, not difficult at all. You just have to remember to drain the coolant system and transmission first.

sure it's not difficult, but it does take a lot longer. anyways, you sound like you've got a set plan, so get to it i guess
