Im planning on servicing the Q45 transmission by doing a fluid exchange and replacing the filter. I called two different dealers to get the filter and both times they told me it the filter doesnt require any service or replacing. I find that hard to believe. I told them im doing a full fluid exchange and would rather just replace it if im removing the pan. He told me "you already have the part, you dont need it" So he only gave me the part number for the pan gasket...

So those that have done the service, did you replace the internal filter? I plan to going down to precision auto tune since they use a BG fluid exchanger and have all the fluid replaced. And when i get home drop the pan and exchange the filter/gasket.

What do you guys recommend? its 2000 Y33 125K mi.

Yes, and it is different than the RE04R on the G50. Gasket, crush washers (get extra), filter and one-time use bolts. If the fluid is brown at all, use regular Mobil ATF first, then follow with M1. Install a B&M 70264 in front of the driver's side fender intake.

14 qts. of M1 ATF, 4 oz. of LubeGuard Red.

I agree, the filter should be changed. For the record, despite my stellar maintenance of my Q, I have NEVER changed my transmission filter. Original transmission at 212k shifts fine, even through blowing an engine last year. I'm not saying it's a good idea, I've just been lucky. When it blows I'll just buy a new transmission, not spending the money on it now. *knocks on wood*

Great Post!

I actually did call IOS and they are the ones that told me to NOT replace the filter. His attitude was more of "are you serious, why would you replace the filter if its designed to last forever!"

Would you happen to have part numbers for all the items mentioned above? The transmission cooler I assume is aftermarket so ill just ebay that.

Sometimes you have to insist on a part if you want it. I got the same treatment at T3 of all places a few years ago. The service advisor/manager/paperwork jockey just rolled his eyes and asked me if I was "one of those NICO-Nuts"

I assume the filter is available for the Y33? It's not available at all for the wife's G35. From the aftermarket replacements I see on eBay, it appears that the entire back side of the filter "screen" is visible when removed, so I plan on removing the filter, backflushing it with a can of brake parts cleaner, and reinstalling.

Then ask him for the transmission flush kit.

http://www.summitracing.com for the B&M was best at one time. I'll see if I can find the part numbers.

Get B&M 70268 for in front of radiator mounting if that is your preference. All those pictures are lost.

Do pull a Q45tech and examine it under high magnification as filters, if they work, will have embedded particles in them. I would say change at least every other exchange or every 50K miles.

Will the B&M transmission cooler be ok to use during winter months? I live in utah and in the spring and fall the temp can fall to 30 degrees. I dont drive the car in winter at all anymore. Would probably be willing to add inline filter if its not too much work.

If anyone can get part numbers it would be appreciated. Want to get this ordered and start driving the car. Its been put away since october.

The B&M has a bypass built into it so it diverts the coolant if it is not warm.

There is an excellent post by Skibane about hose routing for the FGY33 AT cooler. A filter is a great idea.

Hey Guys!
There has always been a myth about the transmission filter on all the models. Truth is, when you ask a dealer guy they will always say lifetime since they are never replaced in the shop. Whenever there was a major service (when the transmission service was included) the techs would always CLEAN the transmission filter in the parts washer, this after a flush and before a refill. The fact of the matter was Service Departments wanted to keep the cost of the services down so they could generate more labor and not compromise an overall price increase for the service in its entirety. Now-a-days the new Matic-S cars only have a magnetic pan en-lieu of the strainer.

Now, for a DIY job many service guys (and me included) WILL recommend a filter replacement just for the simple fact that most people don't have a good parts washer just lying around in their garage. There is also the fact that most won't/can't perform a flush. The flush is important because it will push most (if not all) particles into the strainer/filter right before it is washed. Obviously if you can’t perform a flush all of these particles are still in the gears and will eventually recirculate and deteriorate the new fluid. In addition, you get a good piece of mind feeling you did the job to completeness and change the filter out while you’re dropping the pan anyways.

Here are some links to the gasket, strainer, or-ring and crush washer, all for the FGY33:

Strainer: http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/Infinit ... 51x04-.htm

O-Ring: http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/Infinit ... 41x07-.htm

Gasket: http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/Infinit ... 51x02-.htm

Crush washer: http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/Infinit ... 01m02-.htm

Hope this helps!

Thank you sir for the part numbers. Just went ahead and ordered all items and other things needed.
Do any of you guys use an inline filter? I was thinking of getting the magnefine inline filter. Ive read good reviews and feedback. Im thinking of getting this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnefine-3-8-I ... 230841287a
No replacement for a good fluid exchange but cheap insurance. I cant seem to find specs on size, dimensions, or flow rates.

Might try a search as there is at least one post on it being added. Might be in IOM.

One time use bolts come with the gasket kit.

Joe has spoken. Go forth and exchange thy ATF in peace.
