Does the odometer become less accurate overtime

I have been meaning to ask this for some time and I don't have any problems with my odometer whats so ever. But like all motors that work continuously I have to imagine that the odometer motor will become slower ans slower over time.

So is this possible or does the odometer stay accurate forever?

my " LED trip meters" now read 4% slow compared to the odometer.....they show 96 miles traveled when the odometer moves 100 miles.

Right, I remember reading your post on that and Brian thought it might be your tires not being OEM size....

But the only thing that give the trip-odometer "info" are the speed sensors. so your problem may lie there but its to small to give a crap.

Normally the difference between brand new tires with 11/32" tread and worn out tires 2/32" tread is ~ 9/32" or 0.28125".Adding this variance to a LOADED 26" tire nets 12.25/12.0 or 2%.

Once you get away from oem 215/65/15 tires the variance can increase.Also tire grow at speed above 75 mph but this tends to cancel the errors at speeds below 75 mph.

Yes but the trip-odometer has no motor in it because its just a display. Where on the odometer there is a motor than can possibly slow down with age. I assume this is why most newer cars have a LED odometer display rather than the older style.

I'm not so sure about that - nowadays, 0's and 1's might be easier for the "average" person to falsify than tearing apart the dashboard.

True... but I bet that was the reason in '98 when they made the changeover.

Could also be to save money because as each year goes by electronics get cheaper and cheaper. But to the normal used car salesmen its really hard to roll back LED odometers, And there Carfax to back it up too.
