So I’m currently doing the timing belt on my car and while I have everything off I was thinking about deleting my AC system. It’s a 90 so takes r12 and don’t really want to convert it since I’m in California and I live near the beach. I don’t care about the gains or weight savings just seems pointless to have it. All I really want to know is if it will affect my heater/defrost?

Nope. The heater core and mixer door works separately from the compressor.

Actually the AC does work with the defrost setting, if you are in a humid place and it gets foggy/damp; the AC will blow dry the air vs moist ambient air. I notice this on cooler days here and the windows fog up quite a bit and take a long tome for the air blower to de fog the windows.

I decided to not delete it thankfully. That’s mainly what I’d want to keep it for when it rains here my windows fog up and I can’t see anything so I definitely need the defrost

The 134 conversion is pretty suimple, especially if the system is already empty. just replace the receiver drier (not absolutely necessary but recommended) then buy the conversion adapters and charge the system with 134, pretty simple.

You really need to change the oil in a/c system if going to 134A, the oil used in R12 is not compatible with 134. Mineral oil (R12) vs. either ester or PAG oil. Any o-rings need changing too if you really want to do it right, again, the o-rings will go away after a while if not the correct rubber for 134.

The conversions work but you really need a denser or larger condenser too as 134 ones are quite a but bigger, it really lets them exchange temps like the old R12 did. Or an additional dedicated cooling fan can work. The difference between cooling and freezing.

134 runs at somewhat higher operating pressures too so it can load older hoses to burst easy.

I honestly hardly ever need ac it rarely ever goes over 90 degrees where I live and even on a hot day I don’t drive too far which is why I wanted to remove it. Maybe if I get bored someday I’ll conver it, thanks for all the info guys
