Does the front output shaft on a 96 pathfinder have to be connected?

Looking into buying a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder to do a motorswap into my hardbody truck. The Pathfinder is 4wd, my truck is 2wd. Instead of buying another trans, can I just leave the front output shaft off and run it in 2wd all the time?
