As with everyhitn else on cars...model years go on, and they add electronics to make them more accurate and reliable (and expensive...).
That's about the only explantion I can give...I gave a stock '95 auto trans to a buddy so that he use the internals, and after disassembling them both, he couldn't really swap any parts.
Now, this was a '90 that he had...the '94 'vert 240SX maybe had a more similar auto, but I'd bet it's not plug and play.
