Does Music Box rip music to MP3 or WMA?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Does Music Box rip music to MP3 or WMA?

Just wondering since the bit rate of 132kbps (I think) is pretty low if it's MP3. If it's WMA, that'd be equivalent to 192kbps MP3 which is pretty good.

Yeah I read somewhere it only rips to Mp3 to save space.

I think, Timmbo, KJ is asking whether the "Record" function rips audio CDs to MP3 or WMA format. Given that there are only two seemingly low encoding rates available, he was hoping it was WMA.

KJ, I personally find MP3 encoding at 128 kbps to be acceptable quality - maybe it's just because I play in a band and have lost most of my hearing! That said, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question.

Cheers,David

Well, I may have unwittingly been the source of that "tidbit". You see, I was under the impression that MP3 was used and fed that to Matt while he was writing the NICO EX review, and that's how that particular statement was written into the article.

I'm really not certain one way or the other, but if I had to guess, I would go with MP3 via some proprietary encoder (hence, the unusual bit-rates).

I think 192kbps would be ideal if it was MP3. It's funny how they chose those funny bitrates that no one uses. Hopefully it's WMA because WMA is much superior to MP3!

Anyway, I'll keep looking and if I find the answer, I'll let you guys know.

Ahhh, yes, my apologies for not reading carefully! I am not sure, but at any rate, I love the sound quality, and I am very satisfied that Nissan/Infiniti offers the Music Box/CFC package in their high end audio systems. I am a huge fan of the set-up!

The manual say 105 or 132 (default) kbps.

Yeah, we all know that. But is that encoded with MP3 or WMA???

That's the question this thread is asking.

I'm guessing since that bitrate is so high it is MP3. There would be no point in ripping beyond what the stereo would be able to discern and I've noticed my 64kbps WMAs are at the minimum of acceptable.
