Does getting AWD help with handling in normal weather?

In 2014, the G37 Sedan became Infiniti Q50. G37 Coupe and Convertible became Infiniti Q60 under Infiniti's new naming structure - Here's the place to discuss the Q50 and Q60!

Does getting AWD help with handling in normal weather?

Postby bchorn » Thu Jun 04, 2020 5:28 pm

I'm in the market for a used 2019 Infiniti Q60 and trying to decide if I should get the AWD or RWD. It rarely snows where I live so don't need it for weather. I'm just an aggressive driver who likes to take turns hard so wondered if the AWD system would help me corner. Has anyone driven both a RWD and AWD Q60 to know what the differences are?

Welcome aboard!

I'm going to say no. Here's why: Any miniscule gain in handling will be outweighed (pun intended) by the added weight and complexity of the AWD system. Also, don't opt for the DAS, it's awful.

AWD system being heavy makes the car less balanced than the RWD. My G37 RWD handled much better than my Q60RS AWD does today and they now have similar suspension upgrades. It can help at launch but in the 1/4 mile it eventually loses out or is a wash due to weight. Technically it could assist some in cornering if you are losing rear traction and are not plowing.

In wet and snow it can be much more beneficial.
